What's Wando and islands like to teach? I mean are there many foreigners there and it says in this guide I have that there is actually surf there. Any truth to the rumours or is it just another Korean myth???

I spent nearly a week on the island and on smaller islands near Wando.

I saw only three foreigners walking about, and that was on shinjido, about fifteen minutes away from the tiny city (town, basically).

I was thoroughly disappointed with the town of Wando but impressed with the island and the region overall. The town is run down and lacking economic development. It's a long strip-like shape with the ugliest harbour I've ever seen for a community its size in Korea.

But I am still tempted to work there for six months someday because the region is gorgeous. Myeongsashimni is a beautiful beach in July, when the weather is perfect, the crowds are festive and the Mokpo Symphonic String Orchestra comes to perform a beachside concert. The water is shallow, the sand nice and the water warm. Hiking is good on other islands, like Wando itself, and trails take you to cliffs and beaches worthy of an entire afternoon's entertainment.

But if you're looking for other foreigners I recommend Tongyeong on the east coast, where you'd be close to Busan, Changwon, Jinju, Masan and Geoje. Moreover, Tongyeong has five times the charm of Wando, as a town.

IMO.

I experienced some fun waves to swim in but I saw nothing large enough to surf on.

But there are many islands; maybe off of an outer island.

The closest half-decent surfing to here is on the north coast of Japan.

I did it a couple of times but you need a thick wetsuit.

when I was at myeonshashimni (?) There were tiny waves, enough to knoch over a few koreans (and almost drown them in half a foot of water). nowhere near enough to surf on when I was there. but maybe if there was a cyclone somewhere down south. I was disapointed with wando aswell, it looks to be dying somewhat, most old shabby buildings. nice place though, myeonshashimni has it all over hyundae.

You're in the same province, but not too close.

The so-called "Moses Miracle", parting of the tides to create a landbridge from the main island to a smaller island, isn't from Wando off the south coast but is off Jindo, on the southwest coast. I was there, Jindo, last summer and was amazed at the outdoor evening concerts, dancing and general party atmosphere of the young adults along the beach after dark. A great camping place, well worth a visit in July, even if the water phenomenon is only half-manifested at dawn.

Visit Jindo if you are in the area. It's an interesting island for more than just the many wandering dogs.
