so why do foreigners still get treated like sub-humans when it comes to handphones in Korea? My minutes are about to run out, and I went to 4 phone shops today and NONE of them would let me, the lowly foreigner recharge my phone...and of course, I have to wait until I renew my visa before one shop said they will sell a phone to me with a monthly plan...this was told to me in October. Guess I have to stick with lowly Itaewon to keep a phone... Rolling Eyes And in October, the phone I had was all of a sudden cut off, so I went to the shop I had been going to all year, only to have them tell me "sorry, foreigners can't use this phone anymore". All I want is a simple, plain phone to make and receive calls. I think having a phone is a basic human rght. I felt sad all afternoon today...

If you have an LG phone go to the OZ store, I think with Samsung you have to go with Show( ?). They always let me recharge my phone with no trouble at all. No trips to Itaewon for me.

This is 2011, clearly no one should expect anything to be good ever. If you don't like Korea, leave! If you don't like your home country, 'check out early'! All rights to valid complaints are hereby rescinded by the coalition of random internet douchebags!

Princess--- I agree that most Korean phone shops are run by dullards who desperately want to wish any foreigners out of existence.

Having said that,t here's an easy way around this. Most Korean communities, even the small ones, sell prepaid minute recharge cards for whatever phone you have. You can find these cards in any of the "Asian Food" stores that sell halal and SE Asian foodstuffs to the migrant workers, or sometimes in or near your town's bus stop. Where do you live? If you're in Seoul, just hit up any convenience store in Itaewon.

Weird, all my coworkers just signed two year contracts with Oz to get the cheapo Android, no problem, no Korean co-signing.

Anyone on this site that complains of not being able to get a "good" phone on an E2 visa is clearly going to the wrong phone shops.

I've never had a problem with my phone or getting a contract. I use LG. Very satisfied with my phone.

Do you have any Korean friends with an older phone? They might be able to add a plan to theirs. After a month or so, they can call up and ask that the bill be deducted from your bank account directly. This is what I did before upgrading to a smart phone (paid for up front then just a monthly contract).

My phone got cut off too. I guess it automatically terminated when my previous visa ran out. The odd part was that I still hadn't finished the down payment on the phone... The local KT stores couldn't help me at all. They told me they had deleted my number, that it was impossible to reopen it and that I had to buy a brand new phone. When I went to KT's main office in my city they fixed the whole problem in 2 minutes. Just remember that the local KT stores can basically help you with... nothing really. They can't sell me a phone, they can't update my billing information, they can't sell me a charger, they can't reopen my phone number.

The problems that some people have in getting phones have nothing to do with whatever year it is. They have to do with this:

Was it a mom and pop phone store or one staffed by some student?

If Mom and Pop- They're Racist. They want you to get out so they can go back to their soap opera.

if Young Person- They're lazy. They want you to get out so they can go back to texting.

Exactly. People like this ruin it for the rest of us...same with having to do all the E2 hoop jumping. I am just VERY frustrated because I never had this many problems with a phone before. Maybe being in Incheon has smething to do with it. I just don't understand why a prepaid phone all of a sudden got cut in October...I mean, a phone I paid for and I was only buying minutes, so it's not like I was going to skip the country and not pay a monthly bill. Then a phone shop sold me another used phone and got my phone going...now in January, they say they can't recharge it, and I get sent all over the place and evry phone shop says "NO". And no foreigners. Then they crossed their arms and made X's and said "No, sorry". The last place wouldn't even help me by telling me where I COULD go when I asked. The two women just looked down and ignored me until I left. One of them had a very short hair cut and looked meaner than sin on sin.....eeesh

Why do you people always wait UNTILL you get to Korea to figure out how to get a phone?Think about it BEFORE you leave your home country ( where you have unbestknown priveleges).

Go on the AT and T website and sign up for a contract with a 3/4Gphone.
Then have your phone shipped over to you. Takes all of about 15 mins'. of your life.
