Anyone else finding it hard/impossible to read an actual book or article that is longer than one page anymore? The smartphones are killing my attention span. Is it just me?

I dont own a smartphone. To be honest, I'm not even sure what a smartphone is. I'm not very tech savvy.
As for reading, it just depends on my mood and what I'm reading. To be honest, a lot of what is written isn't really worth reading. I'm not saying that there isn't a lot to be gained from books, but for every ton of paper out there, maybe a kilo is really worth reading. Certainly not a hobby for one trying to travel and live light. I have my staples I travel with, but other than that, the Internet provides ample cortical stimulation. It's less cumbersome, and I'm not the kind of person that needs to hoarde books like trophies.
Long story short, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I never liked fiddling so I cannot appreciate playing around with hi-tech gadgets. Moreover, I always preferred a full-length feature film to a 22 minute commercial-filled tv show or those one hour shows where the last 20 minutes are littered with annoying ad breaks. Hell, I like taking long walks and love an extended, slow game of chess. So, it is no surprise that I always have preferred reading a novel instead of a magazine or newspaper, and that I totally cannot relate to attention-deficit behaviour of any kind.

Totally depends. If I find a book that is fascinating, I can tear through it in a few days.

Most of the time, I'm not actively reading a book. I keep one next to my bed and read a little if I have trouble falling asleep at night.

I have a Kindle, but I don't use it that much because I think $11.99 per "book" is still too expensive for an electronic download.

It is more difficult for me, yes. Not due to smartphones but my computer and the internet. The only times I manage to focus on reading is going to/from work and when I'm traveling.

I have never paid for a book. I always make new friends and borrow their books, read them, and sometimes even give the book back.

Don't remember the last time I actually read a book.

No touchscreen, wifi or 3G connection, no games or media playback. Books are rubbish.

I don't read much either. The only books I've read by choice in recent years were the Harry Potter books. I did enjoy some of the stuff I had to read in college, though. I prefer to watch movies, as they're faster and easier. I blame that Accelerated Reader program I was put through in middle school for squashing any love for reading I might have had.

The worst part of this is that I've always wanted to be a novelist.

There are plenty of free books for Kindle (or kindle apps) if you look for classics on the Amazon site.
