Blockbuster Nation
How Seoul beat Hollywood, making Korea an Asian star
By Mark Russell and George Wehrfritz
Newsweek International May 3 issue - Orcs, elves and hobbits may rule Middle-earth, but they've proved no match for Korea's hunky heartthrobs. Opening in December, the final episode in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy sold 6 million tickets to become the most popular foreign film ever screened in South Korea. Yet two homegrown melodramas—"Taegukgi," about a family divided during the Korean War, and "Silmido," a true tale of convicts trained to infiltrate the communist North and assassinate its leader—dwarfed Tolkien's epic. Both sold more than 11 million tickets in this country of 48 million people, smashing previous sales records by more than 35 percent.

So, I heard they were remaking My Sassy Girl, and I have to know when that will be released, if it'll be released at all. |

Interesting article, seems strange that the industry thrives on the free market but they still want to cling onto the quotas

I remember when Jurassic Park opened in my home town (in England) it was on every screen in the 7 screen multiplex- and still sold out. |

I am not sure I would call the actors in those movies, "heartthrobs". |

Believe me he is popular with the 14 year old girl set!!!! We had a garage sale earlier in one of my second year classes, and they all had to come up with team names. One group's choice: "Forever Won-bin" I love my girls sometimes.
Seems to be a pretty good looking guy (note the lack of comma).

"East 17", the boyband that would've been TWOCing cars if they weren't on TOTP.
I frigging hate them. Still.
*TWOC=taken without consent- police term for thieving
TOTP=Top Of The Pops- popular music TV show in England

Koreans are truly first class in making thing look good. Image making coming quite naturally around here. The visual fields and design fields are where I think Koreans could make honest name for themselves as long as they don't pretend to be the substance behind the image. It is in the substance where Korea is usually, but not always very shaky. |

It's going to be directed by the woman who brought us "Bend it Like Beckham", so don't get your hopes up. |

I happened to like that movie, so we'll see. Hope it's just as good as the original, as an English language release will be more visible to more people. This movie deserves a good remake, as far as I am concerned. |

Ah-hah, so that's why the old movies here look so drastically different. I always wondered what happened in the 90s to all those trashy movies that come on late at night. They all just vanished and good riddance to them... |
