Soooooo I think I am going to do a midnight run. I'm not going to go into why but thankfully I had the smarts to set up another job in Japan once things at work started going south. The only problem is that I will have to stay in Korea a few days after I run in order to get my Japanese work visa. I thought about trying to get the visa and then running, but I can't get off work. I can't use my "lunch break" because I have to eat my lunch with the kids.
I think it will be obvious right away when I don't show up for my 12 hour shift at work. (OK, I'm exaggerating-it's only 10.5 hours.)
Since my boss is quite vindictive and generally evil I figure he will do whatever is in his power to have me stopped, or at least cancel my visa asap. Do I have 10 days after the cancellation to leave the country? I'll need about 2 days.
And lastly, since I haven't been here the full 6 months and still technically owe the airfare (although at the time of the run I would have worked for free for 2 weeks) is there anything that might happen to me when I try and leave? |

Based on his stated 10.5 hour work day, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the OP works for Korea Poly School. |

I have a strange feeling that wasn't in your contract... Let us know where you worked when you get a chance.
I can't find the source material, but all the second-hand info says you have 15 days after the visa is cancelled. |

Your comment about not being able to leave during lunch shows that despite your use of initiative in getting out of a bad situation, you are still mentally beholden to exploitative employers - WHY WOULD YOU worry about taking a lunchtime or lunchtimes out of your school when you're going to leave anyway?
Don't hang around Korea after you've finished w/out telling your employer - GET OUT as soon as you've got the ticket etc. If you're not planning to be around why in heaven's name are you worried about skipping lunches with the kids? Just say you've got to do banking and go out and get the visa from the J Embassy.
If you think they're going to refuse you permission to miss lunch times, tell them sorry, you MUST go and do banking, talk to your landlord, go to the post office whatever. Why worry when you're going to be gone soon?
I've been puzzled by something I see in Korea a lot - exploited employees who even when they're going to do something about it, still have the mindset that they have to be concerned by what their exploiter will think if they do reasonable things in the time they have before they quit or run. Just skip as many lunches as you like and tell your employer, sorry have to go and sort things out.
Why worry when you're going to be gone soon? |

Your boss cannot stop you from getting on a plane. But he can lock you out of your apartment. So just ditch work and live in a motel for a few days. How the hell will he know where you are? He won't even care probably. You think a bad manager never had someone run on them before? |

I kind of echo earthquakez' advice, but I am not sure it's always best to just do what you want. I would try to be as nice as I could until the last day.
Now, what I don't understand with the original poster is this:

Why can't you? I don't see the problem with the plan. Please detail EXACTLY why you cannot 1) get your visa 2) run

At some point, you are leaving? Why not put 2 and 2 together and leave when the visa comes? Why play drama games with the hagwon owner and miss the third to last day before you actually leave the school? Make the leaving the LAST day. Don't put the horse before the cart.

cancel my visa asap |
That's good, then you have proof you aren't working for them. You will have a certain number of days before you have to leave the country, like 2 weeks I think. If you want you can transfer it to a tourist visa, and VOILA!! You got 30 days to wait for your Japanese visa. The noose will be removed from your neck.
Don't worry about the airfare issue. If you choose to leave after getting the visa, then he won't have time to do anything. If you stay in Korea, I guess it is possible he could take legal actions, but if you are working 2 weeks without getting paid then that should cover it. He won't have a case then. |
