So I was wondering, can a landlord say you cannot have a pet if your school is leasing an apartment from them. By pet I mean like guinea pig or a rabbit. I just don't think a small pet like that can do anything more harmful than a normal human can... Is there any laws about a landlord being able to dictate something like that

In my Officetel, several people are keeping small dogs, so I doubt it will be a problem.

If it lives in a cage or tank then no-body cares.
If it can pee on the floor and/or stink they will probably tell you no (but lots of people keep those little ankle biting dogs anyway.

One of my coworkers has two cats, a 35 pound dog, and two hamsters in a place that's about 8 pyong. Did I mention that her apartment reeks?

OP: Do you already have the animal? If so, I'd get permission in writing to keep him/her in the officetel before moving in. Your school can cause a lot of problems for you if the landlord objects, and many animals lose their homes under similar circumstances. If not, I think you should wait a while and get settled before you adopt.

@Mattdemers: You're not very imaginative. My three angels are fine in an officetel, and my dog and I are celebrating our third anniversary today. I'd insist on a written guarantee before moving to a new place, though.

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Homeless people have been known to take decent care of their animal friends despite their own difficult circumstances. I imagine an 8-pyeong officetel would be paradise compared to the streets or a shelter.

My cat seems a bit bored in our small space but she is doing pretty well for being 14 and I'm not sure that a bigger space would make any difference. She no longer wants to climb and jump the way that she used to. She is very spoiled. I knitted her a mouse and filled it with catnip that my mother sent and she will only eat soft food which is expensive here, so I sometimes cook for her. It's a pain, but it's totally worth it.

I'm guessing the hamsters cause a lot of the smell, depending on how often their cage is cleaned. But oh wait, cat litter can be pretty reeky if it's not cleaned every day, too.

An office-tel is fine for a dog if they get regular walks every day.

To the OP: Just make sure that if you let your rabbit or guinea pig roam freely (under supervision, it's actually very healthy for them to be able to run around sometimes) make sure they don't gnaw on any woodwork, cords, etc. Also, guinea pigs do squeal when excited, so they are not always the quietest of pets.

If you walk them well it should be fine... But I estimate barking would be an issue

But I called my landlord and he said no pets not even a hamster. I thought that was a bit overboard. I doubt he knows what a hamster even is

You should have done it Korean style: check your lease, make sure that there are no conditions about pets. Bring a pet in without telling your landlord. He didn't include the condition in the lease so he has no grounds to kick you out.

My Korean friend tried to convince me to do this when I moved into my new place with my two dogs. I refused and made him tell my landlord up front about my two dogs. My landlord was cools so thankfully it all worked out.

I don't see the harm in it, I will probably get a pet anyways... maybe not a dog though, just because it's a bit tough to maintain if you are just by yourself and away most of the time....but I hear Hedgehogs are very low maintenance.
