I'm certain (as things look right now) that I will only be in Korea for one year. What is the best mind-set to have? I try not to have the "I don't care because I'm here for less than a year now" attitude but when things go sour all the time with so many things it's really easy and comforting for me to fall back upon.

Yes, and also if the "I don't care attitude" here is really that bad to have seeing so many others seem to have it - even towards me.

Thanks

Just tell yourself you're only here for a short time, are living in a foreign country, so enjoy the experience and remind yourself you're actually getting out of here and not being stuck like so many bitter folk here.

Cheers!

When I'm having a bad-Korea-day I just look at my avatar and fantasize about buzzing down a street in Shepherd's Bush on my Lambretta with a hot chick on the back........if only.....

(1) Bear in mind that any slight you suffer is not just perceived by you, it is due to RACISM

(2) They WANT your money. All of them. All of it. Every market stall you go to, every Homeplus you visit, every employer you work for is trying to take 100% of your money.

(3) All the food here is way more toxicy and chemically and chemicallier than anywhere else in the world and will kill you. Steer clear.

(4) Very few westerners survive more than 6 months due to the AIR POLLUTION rotting their lungs and burning their eyes out. Anyone who claims to have been here longer than 6 months is probably lying.

(5) When anyone knocks into you or pushes past you it is because you are WHITE (or BLACK) and they'd never ever ever ever do that if they were under the assumption you were Korean.

(6) If you don't spend 98.5%+ of your free time drinking in a dark smoky place you're an anti-social loser, so try not to get into the kind of mindset that takes you out 'hiking' or 'visiting places' on your weekends.

(7) Your culture is better than this one. Never forget. Never surrender.

( 8 ) Don't look at Koreans as individuals, they're NOT, the reaction of any Korean person to any situation is the same for each and every last one of them. PLEASE remember NOT to start saying things like "Min-ju thinks..." it should be "KOREANS think...". This is important.

(9) The media ONLY reports crimes committed by English teachers. No one else. PLEASE keep this in mind whenever you interact with any Korean, as they are PROBABLY thinking you are a drug-dealing/doing kiddy fiddler rapist drunken sex addict whilst you discuss how chilly it's gotten today.

(10) DO NOT TRUST ANY SOURCE OF NEWS EXCEPT DAVE'S ESL CAFE. This is VITAL! All knowledge of Korea MUST come from this board and NEVER EVER from Koreans. They'll just lie to you. Unlike the good folk here. REMEMBER - All of us, no matter our race, creed or nationality MUST stand together as non-Korean brothers and sisters. Always keep this at the forefront of your mind.

If you follow these guidelines your mindset will sort itself out. If you follow them to the letter you might even be cool enough to continue posting here. I'd say "have fun", but that'd just be taking the piss since you've moved to a place that is a cross between hell and Milton Keynes.

Life in general is short. Your attitude always and everywhere should be to enjoy it ravenously and with optimism.

i like it Very Happy

OP, you should think:
-no regrets - this is an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life (make the most of your time; don't just hang out at the neighbourhood GS and drink your weekends away... you can always do a weekend trip and drink there Wink)
-people may occasionally be unfriendly to you, but it's not necessarily about you
-remember, getting angry at someone who is rude to you is fairly pointless. if you do end up snapping at someone, bystanders probably won't care who's in the wrong, they'll still give you a dirty look.
-just brush off things like that; you'll probably never see them again
-although people will tell you time and time again, "korea has been done by so many people, it's not new territory," while true, chances are people back home will be really interested in your experiences and you should be proud of that!

1 mindset for every weekday:

Conquer your past in the present, or your past will conquer your future

Tit for tat

Focus on the good

Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars

Take no prisoners
