Hello all
I'm actually writing on behalf of a friend who is still in America.
She and her boyfriend both applied to a hagwon hoping to work together. They went through a very difficult visa process (he had to return to Britain as he is not an American citizen). The employer assumed that she would get the visa last Wednesday and stupidly booked the flight for Saturday. With Christmas, she did not receive it until Friday, and when she contacted her employer to confirm, the employer told her that they did not have an available position for her.
She offered to pay for the flight, which is a bad idea.
He boyfriend, as far as I know, is still scheduled to work there.
So, what about the visa? Since she never started the contract, would she have to redo the entire process?
Anyone have recommendations for jobs in the Songpa area?
Thanks in advance! |

If she already has the visa in her passport she is screwed (for the time being).
She cannot use it for another employer and cannot transfer from abroad (nor transfer during her first 6 months if she does get on a plane and come here.)
She cannot cancel it by herself nor can she do it from abroad.
She cannot apply for a new visa confirmation number or visa until it expires.
For all nationalities EXCEPT Americans this means a wait of 90 days.
Americans usually get a 1 year visa so she may not be able to do anything in regards to working in Korea for the next year.
Because she can't get an ARC she can't do anything without the express assistance of her non-employer.

K-immi rules make no sense.
Yet another story of another person getting screwed over by yet another Hagwon owner. |

Would you suggest she works for the company anyway, if they give her the chance? or is this a telling sign? It seems that otherwise she would have to do the whole process again and take a chance with another company...
I'm surprised as the company is pretty established. This isn't a back-alley institute...
It's ridiculous she can't even get a letter of release and try to find another job... |

Well she now knows that her company cannot be trusted. But she's in a bind. Tell her to go to China. |

Better to find out now than be stranded here and be screwed over. It sucks that you have to deal with this, though. I hope you find something better, and aren't stuck waiting forever. |

Nothing in this post tells why they do not want her to teach for them.
If she has the visa and they offered her a job, then what is the problem? They fired her and replaced her because she would be a day late???? I am very confused. |

They are taking the male over the female? That's interesting. Why do they want a male teacher instead of female? |

Recruiters do not realise that it takes a full week to get an E2 from the korean embassy, after presenting your visa issuance number. |

Which goes back to my post. If she is going to be a little late, did they actually go through the entire process with another person who then was able to get the visa and arrive before the one who lost the offer? This story is MORE than a little fishy. |

And if she got the visa on a Friday and the flight was on Saturday, why did she miss the flight???????? |

All of these sob stories on this forum are full of holes. I haven't read one single hagwon sob story that has made sense even once.
Which leads me to believe that there are two possible options:
1) Lying bastards.
2) Really bad at written communication. They shouldn't be teaching English in Korea anyway.

Aye, if she got the visa on Friday and didn't get on the Saturday flight then it's her fault not the hakwon's. |

She still needed two days to find Korea on a map. So, it's the hagwon's fault. |

sorry for the delay
Again, this is all second hand. They are both currently nomadic, having expected to move to Seoul.
I guess what happened is that the director bought a plane ticket and when the visa didn't come on the exact day (Wed.) she contacted them to inform them. They took the opportunity to just cancel the whole thing, and pressure her into buying the ticket herself. Then they said they may move her to another branch outside Seoul (but not her bf..). They had canceled the flight even though her visa came on Friday.
I think if she hadn't told them, she would have been ok...
I was just posting here to know if anyone knew if she had any power to force them into accepting her. It's not her fault -- I think the hagwon just didn't plan for any snag in the process (I mean, the visa was 1, 2 days late?).
After talking to immigration, the answer seems to be "no"... |
