Have a frequent flier card and use it. (they are far more likely to upgrade you if you travel and have a few miles on your card - keep the regulars happy).
Dress well (dress for success isn't just for business).
Be polite (does this really need any explanation?).
Check in early (if coach is full and the front cabin is not your chances of an upgrade are pretty good).
Ask if it is possible to upgrade (don't e shy). It never hurts to ask.

Dress well, be polite, and travel alone.

Korean Air Prestige class from Toronto to Seoul was probably the best flight I'll ever take in my life.
