I'm looking at a school in Ansan so Itaewon is too far out of the way. So we are looking at the possibility of finding our own apartment outside of craigslist and korea4expats. Have yet to find anything here at Dave's, too.

Any helpful tips on where to go to start our search? We can read Korean but our understanding is pretty limited, and Google Chrome will only translate so much for us.

Your help would be appreciated.

Same way you find an apartment in any other neighborhood in Korea. Grab a Korean friend, go to a neighborhood you're interested in, then look for a realtor's office. They're pretty easy to spot with the whole storefront being plastered with fliers advertising apartments. I don't read Korean at all and I can spot a realtor's office from a mile away.

I got my own apartment. I went to the realtor's office. That was all.

Do you speak Korean? If not, was it difficult to explain what you were looking for? Did you even care what you got?

I knew precisely what I could afford. I told them my deposit and what I could pay in rent and they did the rest. I'm not bilingual, but I can say "officetel", "rent", and "deposit".

It's actually even possible to find a realtor who speaks some English. I can't recommend you one in particular, but some of the areas in Seoul where they have modern officetel buildings, will have at least one English speaking staff at the realtor's office.

Best to bring a Korean friend with you, though.

Watch out for realtors marking up their price for foreigners

Try ads on FB Marketplace or Craiglist. More often than not you'll be dealing with foreigners there who speak English.
