So I'm super excited about going to Korea and I have spoken with an agency that wants to place me in Seoul (where I assume a lot of individuals are placed) and my brother and his wife (Korean born married during his first tour in SK) are living there and were hoping that I might find something in their area. I was wondering if anyone has taught in a school in this area that they would recommend and if anyone knows of an agency that hires for schools in this area that would be most helpful as well.

On a side note I am looking for something at an elementary level.

I just also want to say that I spent all last night reading through the threads and I am so excited at the amount of information that I stand to gain and enrich my experience.

I would suggest getting all your paper work done before finding a job.

Takes about 3 months from the start of paper work until you can apply for jobs. The 2-3 month FBI background check is a real downer.

I teach at a public elementary school in Pyeongtaek and I finish my contract at the end of February. I'm not sure if they have found someone to replace me yet or not.
I found my job through Korvia.

I agree with the previous poster though have your paperwork at least started before applying for jobs or you'll only have disappointments.

Yeah I definitely have begun my paperwork. I'm looking at something more in the realm of August. What sort of incentives did the school provide with your job? Did you get it through an agency or on your own?

My paper work should be finished right at the end of February. Its probably cutting it too close. Did you like your environment there?

Yeah that might be a little too close.

I really like Pyeongtaek. I have stayed at the same school for almost 2 years now.

It's about an hour from Seoul and only 20 minutes from Suwon. There are quite a few foreign restaurants and even more in Songtan the area outside the Osan airforce base in the area. There's a pretty big foreigner community, shopping is good and there are 3 movie theaters. I lived in 3 other cities in Korea before this, but I have to say I like Pyeongtaek best of all of them.

I'm at a GEPIK job and I would highly recommend Henry from Korvia as a recruiter.

I did a Google search on GEPIK and was pleasantly surprised and I will definitely see if this pans out. I know I don't have enough posts in order for you to PM me, but please check back in a few days and I will hopefully be PM able so you can send me Henry's info if you'd like.

Perhaps you should take a cruise through the contract sticky thread and have a look at some public school contracts (GEPIK/EPIK).

The "incentives" are all standard with PS jobs.
Airfare,
housing,
medical
pension
low or no taxes (depending on your country of origin and filing of residence forms).
4 weeks standard vacation time (+ 2 more weeks if you renew).

Unfortunately, most hagwans offer similar (to each other) benefits:
airfare
smallish housing
10 days vacation time
no medical (in spite of what it says in the contract)
no pension
higher tax rates (they treat you as a subcontractor even though your contract says employee).

That sounds good but I had seen some postings where airfare was not included and the rooming was in a hostel type setting. I am glad to hear that the vast majority is of a standard that I enjoy.

NEVER in a public school (EPIK/GEPIK) contract.

Actually, I will amend that statement since some of the newer contracts have an entry/exit allowance in lieu of airfare (1.3 million won inbound and 1.3 million more outbound) with return airfare between contracts if you renew (coupled with the extra 2 weeks vacation for your home leave).

I think you may need another night or 3 reading.
