Hey!

Where you live in Korea, do they through dirt on the sidewalk? I ask because I have seen this in Daejeon and a couple other places (not sure about Seoul). One of the Koreans told me it was because it's cheaper (which I could see). I am from Chicago, so usually when it snows you see snow plows out in full force and salt out. =)

They salt, sometimes - but it's usually dirt. I actually rather they not salt -- it's bad for my car.

I used to live in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, and they used sand instead of salt -- for many reasons (better for the environment/ cheaper/ sand on packed snow was better traction than melted snow than refroze when temperatures dipped even lower/ et cetera).

The dirt/sand on snow seems normal to me....

Salt is really crappy for the soil as well. I'm surprised when Koreans use salt to melt their snow, seeing as there's only so much usable land they've got in which to grow food.

Nothing. It's icy and slick as a tricky over used ski slope for walking, but smooth sailing for cars since their hot motors and tires melted it off the roads.

yeaaaah but they're not growing much food on the streets of seoul. i wish they'd salt more.

seems like the salting is done by storefronts who clear the area in front of their store. no retail? then f you - you slip'n'slide.

We get the S-Class of plastic burlap. Blankets are for the little people.

Oooh fancy!

I wear boots with decent grip this year, so it's been much easier navigating. I'm amazed that almost nobody shovels, though.

Nothing, the occasional patch of cardboard. No gritting. It keeps snowing here and the past week of snow has become compacted into ice.

Sorry, I'm a snow newbie since I grwe up in Southern California.

Is the dirt just for traction for the cars?

Does no one else think it's amazing that someone thinks 'throw' is spelt 'through'?

Nothing wrong with using sand to make ice less slippery. However, much of the sand here is too fine to have a lasting effect, but then again the ice here is not lasting very long anyway.

While they use regular salt, NaCl, on the main roads back home, they seem to use a lot of CaCl2 here. It's supposed to be better for cars, but much more expensive.
