I came upon this website [REMOVED FOR PRIVACY]. The operators are two Korean public school teachers (from what I've gathered while watching a few of their videos).
On their website they sell T-Shirts, and they appear on television and magazines (possibly getting paid to do so).
I think what they are doing is great, but is it legal for them to do?

No. They are in contravention of the "public servants" act if they are getting paid to do it (2nd job.)
They risk getting fired if caught.

Interesting that you chose to name the site when you know they were potentially in violation of their contracts, especially on a site which is known to be read by Korean authorities from time to time. |

Eat Your Kimchi is hardly low profile in the first place, so why be coy? |

I have edited my original post to remove the name of their website. |

Did the dorky couple piss you off?
Send you a t-shirt the wrong size?
Do you really think what they are doing is great?
Sounds vindictive. If so, ......
Authorities have changed rules (CBCs, vacation times, med exams, etc.)
and have made certain restrictions because of information they gather here.
Everybody knows that. If you don't, you've been under a rock
for the past xxx years. |

Someone e-mailed us this thread, so we can clear up some things.
1. We don't get paid for anything, but we wish they'd change the VISA rules so we could.
2. Our t-shirts are sold through Paypal in dollars, not through Korea or Korean won. If you sell something on ebay or craigslist, it's not a job in Korea, and it has nothing to do with Korea.
Hope this clears things up. If anyone wants to help us get an Entertainment VISA so we can make money in Korea via our website, we'll give you a t-shirt. |

Thank you for clarifying.
So if you find a 2nd employer to pay you through PayPal, or some other online payment system, then it's legal to do another job in Korea while under an E2? |

I have no clue. All I know is selling a couple t-shirts isn't a job. Guess I can't sell my old stuff on Craigslist either, because that would be a job, too, right? |

Well, I saw your business card ("eatyourkimchi | VIDEOGRAPHY * SOCIAL MEDIA * WEB DESIGN"), so I thought you were running a business.

It might not be a visa issue (since it's done through a foreign site).
Still, does that mean it's ok as they haves public servant jobs? Could a regular Korean teacher do the same? |

No. That's not a business. It's just stuff we do for fun, not for business. |

I'm pretty sure what you're doing isn't legal.
I love your justifications for why what you're doing is legal

Yes because advertising a used sofa and cashing in and accepting payments on something that isn't a business but conveniently called something you do "just for fun" are completely the same.
Just because you're accepting dollars, doesn't make it any less dodgy. So I can open up a site that sells (insert merchandise here) and as long as it's not Korean currency it's ok (even though it's safe to assume in this case most people would exchange that money for won)?
It's only a matter of time until other people take notice and exploit this loophole. They will say the same thing, "it's not a business I swear! It's just for fun!"
Your lessons on euphemisms must go really well at that job of yours. |

Then why did you say "Front of our business cards. What do you think?" in the comments section?
I take it the business card was also something you made "just for fun?" |

For some reason this thread is starting to seem less like a general discussion and more like a personal inquisition. Last answer we're giving here:
We made business cards so that we aren't empty handed when people give us their business cards. It looks bad, supposedly, if we don't have one to give back.
Thanks! |
