Hi
Suddenly, my desktop stopped switching on. I cannot switch it on anymore though the lights and power work. I wonder what went wrong.

I live in Suwon. Is there a possibility to get it repaired ?? My desktop is around 3 yrs old and is branded (DELL).

thanks
s

Try resetting the CMOS.......it's two little pins usually situated near the motherboard battery. Connect them with something metal like a screwdriver for about 10 seconds......while turned off of course.

If the lights and power still work, that's good. Does the fan come on and stay on? It may just be that the monitor/LCD is not functioning.

Do you hear a post beep when turing it on? You know.. the usual beep that comes when its turned on. Even though the power 'comes on' it does not mean all is well.

Try taking out the RAM, and VGA card, and re-seating them. If you are up to it, take out the CPU and re-seat that as well.

Take it to a repair shop if that does not help.

Also, do you get the windows startup sound? If you don't, then its unlikely the problem is the video. Reseating components isnt a bad idea, but it can be risky if you dont prepare for static electricity (google it if you dont know how).

CMOS is a good idea. It should be labeled, but the writing is really small. It should be 3 pins in a line with a plastic piece (called a jumper) over 2 of them like this:
[..].

Unplug the computer, pull out the watch battery on the motherboard (there should be one the size of a quarter) and change the pins so they look like this:
.[..]

After 10 seconds, change it back, and put everything back.

@muugii

I wold not say thats their most comnmon problem. I currently work in a large office that has only Dell so I think I can talk from experience.

In 6 years working in my office with Dell I have had maybe 2 failures with powersupplies. The most common is hard drive failure. And I am sure that goes for any brand.

Just my experience. Smile

ohh sorry, thanks for the replies. i forgot to check the thread.

well, i called Dell..they came and changed the MotherBoard for free. but it did not work. they charged me 68,000 Won.

they suggested that i need to change the power supply. they quoted some 250$ for the entire thing. i rejected their offer.

i contacted some local repair people/shops about a compatible Power Supply. but they all wanted to visit and diagnose first even when i was specific about Power Supply. basically, maximising the bills for me.

finally, i read a bit about Power Supplies and bought and changed it myself for 73000 Won.

My dell is working now pretty well, and i am glad i learnt n changed the PS Unit by myself.

thanks for ur replies tho
