I read that you need at least a 1mb upload speed in order to do HD video chatting with skype. I'd like to get some impressions from fellow Korea dwellers before I commit to a new camera.
Are you able to get reliable connections to people on other continents?
What brand webcam do you use?
Any, better, alternatives to Skype? |

Skype works perfectly fine for me to call my parents and they have no problems with it. And that's with them seeing their granddaughter, so the quality is obviously good enough for that.
I really can't imagine why you would need video chatting in HD. Seems like a waste to me.
Regular, ordinary, PC monitor-size video chatting is good enough. |

I, too, use skype regularly to show off the kids. I, however, am far from impressed with my standard definition camera. HD would make it easier to show the entire living room while the kids run around. |

Your connection here is probably much better than the connection back home. That would certainly be the bottleneck.
There is a lot more to it than just HD or SD, though. What resolution are you able to use currently, and is it fluid? If you're running 320x340 or something, a bump to VGA 640x480 would be huge. From there you could try to run something at 720x480, but that's really more of an aspect ratio change. Up from there would likely be 1024x768 or 1280x720, at which point you're really pushing some packets.
edited for awesome typos. |

Korean download speeds are excellent, but the upload stream isn't anything to shout about.
OP, run some bandwidth speed tests to make sure your upload rate can handle it.
Also, speeds are limited with traffic outside of Korea. Make sure to take that into account too. |
