I did a google search and a search on this site and could not find much information about this city. Its small from what I've read but don't know much else.
Anyone lived there? |

Are you sure it's Asan and not Ansan or Anseong? Some of the names can be similiar. If it's Asan it should be on the #1 Seoul subway line. |

Small it is. Like a lot of places, it depends where you are in/around the city.
A lot of people there head over to Cheonan to do stuff, but it's an OK place for a small town. It is part of Line 1 on the Seoul subway system, and there's a KTX station nearby.

Asan has a no kill animal shelter. So if you love dogs and want to volunteer, Asan is the place to be. That is all I know of Asan. |

The good thing about being on the subway line is that if the town has nothing for you it'll be easy to travel on the weekends. |

HAHAHAHA!!! I like you, you're funny.
While Asan IS on the line 1, it's still about an hour from Songtan, 1:40 from Suwon, and 2:40 from Yongsan (give or take, I haven't lived on line 1 for about a year now). Also, the trains come twice an hour, maybe three times IF you're lucky. If you get up to Cheonan and catch the express subway, you can cut these times down, making it to Yongsan in under 2 hours. Also, you can catch Nooriro trains from Sinchang, Onyang-Oncheon, Cheonan-Asan, Cheonan, as well as Mughunwhas and Saemaeuls at Onyang-oncheon, Cheonan-Asan, and Cheonan, and KTX trains from Cheonan-Asan, BUT this will add up.
Decent enough area, if you like small, quiet places. |

Sure it will add up, but a KTX ride from the Cheonan-Asan station to Seoul is about 7,000 won. It's a fair price to pay to ensure that you get to Seoul in under an hour. |

I've heard some good things about Cheonan and even Suwon. Access to a subway line does help with traveling and other things. |

7,000?? When was this? It's closer to 13,000. |

My mistake, thinking of the nooriro.
It's just over 12,000 to Seoul from Asan. |

We took the KTX from Seoul to Asan two weeks ago and the price was about 13,500.
I live in Asan. It's ok but it is far out of the way.
The thing about Asan is that the term "Small town" might be deceptive. there are lots of people here and very little empty space (like most of Korea) so comapring "small town" Korea to "small town" America or Canada might be deceptive. A better comparison might be to a medium sized city minus any nightlife.
In asan you will find lots of places to eat, some shopping a couple of touristy places and that's about it.
Cheonan is about 30-60 mins away by bus depending on traffic or three stops on the train and they have some clubs, movie theatres and malls.
If you do decide to move here post in this forum and maybe we could meet up for a drink. |

I've lived in Asan for a few years now and love it. I like living in the countyside, and as others have mentioned, it's easy enough to get into Seoul or Cheonan if you need your dose of everything foreign.
Asan has lots of nice parks and it's a famous area for hot springs so you can spend plenty of weekends checking out all the famous saunas around. And there are plenty of mountains to check out. After 4 years, I still haven't hiked them all. And, for shopping they have a decent Emart and a nice open-air market.
What made my life much happier was getting a scooter, so I could actually check out all the sites and the mountains around here. I can also cruise into Cheonan really easily and quickly with it. If you have to rely on public transport living in Asan, it might make you insane.
Anyway, Asan is probably best suited for the person who likes chilling at home, doing simple things. Reading, cooking, downloading movies, studying online for an MA course, hiking or running. Like partying? This would not be your scene. |

Thanks. Is there much of a foreigner community? Not that its a deal breaker but it would be nice to know there are more than 2 foreigners in town..lol.
Is there a foreigner bar or hang out spot?
The saunas sound great, especially in the winter time. |

Cheonan to Asan on the Subway is about 20 minutes tops.
Cheonan has a pretty decent foreigner community with a few bars catering to
that crowd - namely Dolce and Banana Bar. Dolce is right around the corner from Mt. Fishtail - a great Indian/Nepali restaurant.
Asan is growing rather quickly - right outside the KTX station are a Lotte Mart, a Galleria and a Toys R Us, along with a few other shops and restaurants that
foreigners might like. |
