Keep your guard up in Itaewon!

If you go anywhere in Itaewon be vigilant about watching your bags and coats. Though in most of Korea I wouldn't really worry this doesn't apply here. If you go out in the evening here don't wear more layers than you need and if I was a lady I would avoid bringing a purse. Leave your coat on or dance with it in your hands if you must. If you're with I group grab a table and have a friend take turns guarding your stuff.

Just wanted to mention all this as I made the mistake of not doing all the above and some decided to steal my small worn canvas bag. No doubt he or she will be disappointed to find out contents include undies, worn tees, a toothbrush, an electric razor and playing cards and not the camera and wallet they may have been hoping for.

It's now happened to me and most of my friends who hang out there once in a while. It's never happened in Hongdae etc.

This has ALMOST happened to me and my friends TWICE in Itaewon (both times at that high class establishment, The Loft).

The first time, some guy came over to us and grabbed a coat like it was his without even batting an eye. We thought about it and asked him what was he doing. He then apologized and said that it was cold and he just wanted a coat for a girl he had met that night. Of course we ripped him a new one. What a jerk!

The 2nd time it was some girl who looked like she was a "regular" there. She just came up and grabbed a coat. One of my friends grabbed her arm and asked her what she was doing. She tried being flirty but my friend pretty much told her she wasnt hot enough to pull of stealing a coat.

Anyway, whats up with stealing coats here?!

Why? What is so wrong with Itaewon that it needs to be demolished?

Haha....Hondacivic...I think Seoul developers have already voted on this. I'm pretty sure that Itaewon is on its way to gentrification.

I'm with Dongjak though, Idont think it needs to be bulldozed, and I hear it's a lot cleaner than it used to be. As much as a I dislike Itaweon....there arent many places in Seoul where you can easily find foreigner establishments. It would be awesome if Itaewon became more like Roppongi (foreign and clean).

There's the dilemma right there... Should we increae D-8 visas for those that want to open up businesses/restaurants in Korea outside of Itaewon or not?

Hondacivic, why does Itaewon need to be bulldozed? What makes it a cesspool? People always say this, but I am not sure why they feel this way.

Rapes, assault, fights, high crime rates, prostitutes. Take your pick man. Itaewon is basically little America if you think about it.

I see those types of crimes in Incheon. Hell, there's a hooker strip near the university hospital.

so I take it you would support bulldozing your entire country to pieces then?

Seeing as how America's a really big country that can be rather eclectic, it would take a lot more for Itaewon to be a smaller version. Laughing

Hondacivic, do you have a link to crime rate statistics for Itaewon/Seoul or is this just opinion? I'm not asking to be argumentative as I'm really curious to see how things break down there. I've seen some awful things there, but I've seen them in Hongdae and Sinchon as well.

Now that most of my Itaewon loving friends have left Korea and I've figured out nicedeli....I have little incentive to go there for the time being. Very Happy

Don't need to. The majority of Americans will do it themselves very soon. With the impending economic collapse and bankruptcy soon, and when Americans got nothng to lose.......they're gonna lose it

Hondacivic: you have a very depressing view on America and Itaewon. To say it is a cesspool and dangerous is heavily exaggerating.

Itaewon is cool, I can buy Taco Bell and Doritos and eat Indian Buffet. Same as I can in most cities in America. I can also buy big sized shoes. If someone were to demolish Itaewon, I would be out my favorite junk foods and have to order shoes from overseas again.

I guess now I must leave my coat on when I go, else someone will try to steal it.

Prostitution is the issue? In this country? Have you ever been to a real Korean red light district, like those you can find in Suwon or Yeongdeongpo? The kind that don't even accept foreigner clients, where the women are in bikinis behind glass windows? Please.

Rape happens everywhere, I'm really not going to buy into Itaewon as a sexual assault hot bed.

I can perhaps agree on the fighting, but that's almost entirely due to the military presence there. Make the Yongsan curfew 11:00 and that problem largely disappears.
