Please help:

I have a n.american laptop that is already able to read korean text and i'm already able to type in Korean. (downloaded the language pack before)

My laptop will be used for Korean distance education, but I'm still running the North American OS.

My problem is that korean websites/pages aren't showing up correctly for me. We all know that Korean websites are sometimes different from western sites, so even though most of the pages load up fine, I'm still having issues with pop up messages showing up as question marks or funny characters. Most university pages are showing up fine, but important messages aren't showing up right at all.

How do I remedy the situation? Do I download something? Do I buy the Korean Windows?

If you're not already, use Internet Explorer.


From the Menu Bar select View, then Encoding, then set it to Korean.

Does that work?

Go into your control panel. Choose "Regional and language options"

Change system locale: It will say something like this "language for non-unicode programs:

Change that setting to Korean and your pop-ups on banking or government sites should stop showing question marks.

Also, as stated above, use Internet Explorer. You might have to use IE6 for some Korean banking/government sites to work correctly.

If none of the above works, you may have to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Korean does not work well on English language operating systems no matter what you do to it. Windows Ultimate allows you to switch between Korean and English operating systems.
