So I'm going to S.Korea in a month or so and I was wondering how eyecare over there worked. Do they have optometry offices? Chain stores like Lenscrafters? Or cheap options like Walmart/Costco? My contacts run out sometime in April and I was wondering if it would be more prudent to just get an exam/new eye wear here in the US or if I could just wait to do so in S.Korea. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Those chains don't exist here as far as I can tell. They have a chain called Davich and a few smaller chains (these ones may be more local). Anyhow, I just had my eyes tested and bought new glasses a few days ago. The optometrist didn't really speak much English, but I managed to get nice glasses with the right prescription. I hear that it's cheaper to buy glasses here generally than abroad, but I went for a more expensive frame so I'm not sure how true that is.

I went to a small eye place with my korean gf.

They gave me an eye exam on the spot, I picked out some lenses and came back 2 hours later to pick up the glasses. She did a little translating for me but I think you can manage solo.

The whole thing cost me 60, 000 won.

Wait until you come here. Eye exams and glasses are cheap and plentiful. Contacts won't be a problem. You'll pay a fraction here of what you'd pay back home, unless you're buying specialty frames/lenses/etc. So many places here, just look for 안경, and you're set.

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I'm definitely going to wait now and just renew my prescriptions/contacts in S.Korea. One less thing for me to worry about so thanks again for the helpful info Smile
