I've not really got on well with my handler at this PS and as expected I got torpedoed with a low evaluation score.

How difficult will this make it to get a new job at hagwon once I complete this contract?

I've memories of reading of such things happening to others before now, how did you fare?

Sorry to hear that man. If your co teacher is the person who is evaluating you then they literally have your balls in their hand. (Sorry if you are a female but you know what I mean)

So in actual fact they are less your co-teacher and actually more your boss since they have the power to have to removed with few questions asked (since people will believe their evaluation). so when they make your life a living hell and you get offside with eachother...the end is predictable.

Cheers, man. Aye I knew it was coming but I was counting on another year or two before trooping on to those sun-lit highlands of a settled life.

It just really rankles, for the first 2-3 months she literally wouldn't speak a word to me or only answer anything with one word. No collaboration, no useful feedback, nothing as to how I could slot my peg into the hole of what is one of Korea's bottom Middle Schools.

Even if you have a "fair" evaluator, the actual evaluations tend to stress negatives and ignore anything positive you may contribute. FWIW, many Korean teachers also despise the evaluations.

If its your co-worker that is the problem, then just ask for a reference off a different coworker. or even your principal.
A bad asessment would only potentially be a problem if you were trying to get another job with the same program (e.g EPIK or whatever).

Hogwons? I wish that they even did research peoples backgrounds first!

But most of them hire without even so much as reading the resume. Its all decided on the photo and nationality.

I'd be surprised if your handler singlehandedly determined the evaluation score.

You're evaluated and given scores by all of your coteachers, your dept head and possibly the vp.

Your handler's vote is just one, and since they tend to be the younger/youngest in the hierarchy, their vote may count the least.

I hear your point, man. My other cos are temps on one year contracts like myself whilst the boss has a permamnent contract. As far as I know I'm the only F to have made it a year here, my predecessors did runners. As I've kinda alluded to, I've trooped on in hard circumstances just to be mowed down. Leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

Wish they had that on a T-shirt.

Why do so many English teachers make this mistake?

That's terrible. I'm sorry to hear it.

*pat pat* <===heartfelt

As a wise person once said: onwards and upwards.

Screw that miserable hag (figuratively) and get a better job while she lives her miserable life with her miserable family. You're too good for that school.

Don't worry OP. Here's the skinny. I got knifed in the back by a senior smoe co-teacher (not re-signed bla bla bla).

Finished my contract, had 5 months on a Thai beach learning about 'being', not 'becoming' - then came back to probably the best EPIK school year in Korea. Sadly, that school shafted me in my 11 month (who would have thunk it?), had another 5 months on a Thai beach - and came back to Korea to......... a very long year.............

So, if you really need to put this in perspective - just think about this co-teacher's life - now - and in the future. What will you be doing? Who's going to be happier?

Heading for the beach in 30 days time. See you there. Remember, "being is more important than becoming".

Good luck.

I must disagree with NYC_GAL....

I know, bad joke.

Anyway, I wouldn't sweat it at all. My current school didn't even ask about for the evaluation from my old school. Plus, at my old school, ALL of my co teachers left in January, and the new teachers didn't know me from Adam, and they wrote the review. So, even if they DID want to look at the review, what does it really tell them?

Just find a teacher that you get along with and have them give you a good evaluation.
I was in the same boat as oldfatarang. I was fired from my second school that I was teaching at for 4 years. My new co-teacher didn't like me, so she told the principle that I was not doing a very good job on teaching the kids.
Then the next day I told my main co-teacher that I would give my notice if they made me teach at a Vo-tech High School. Now I'm the only teacher in my area teaching at one public school. Everyone else is teaching at 2 to 5 different schools.
I was very surprised that my school keeped me around for another contract.

Cheers for the feedback, folks. A holiday for a few months is sounding pretty good right now, farang.
