First time guy here and I think I will be using a recruiter in this process. It will make it a little easier on me....I think. What are your suggestions?

I was looking at ASKETO asknow.ca....until I asked what schools they use and they just gave me a line. It also took 3 days to get back to me on it as well. Thanks but no thanks. I heard Footprints is decent. Any other suggestions would be great.

OP:

Really, when it comes to a recruiter, who cares?

A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.

Unless you have an extensive network of friends and/or colleagues in your target country OR can read/write and speak the local language and can apply directly they are a necessary evil.

REPEAT: A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.

Hello Mr. English speaker this is Mr Hakwon owner.
Mr. hakwon owner, this is Mr. English speaker.
Mr. English speaker, here is the contract. Please read and sign.
School, here is the signed contract. Pay me.
Good bye.

-You are not paying them anything (or you shouldn't be).
-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! - They work for the school.
-They owe you nothing once you get here.
-They are not your friend.
-They are not your baby sitter.
-They cannot help you if things go to *beep* after you get here.

Beyond that it is YOUR responsibility to check the school out.

Do NOT trust ANY recruiter. They are like used car salesmen. They will lie and sell their soul to get the signature on the contract.

Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE in regards to the school or get burned.

Use the recruiters for what they are. Use more than one and keep going until you get what you want. There is no rush and there is certainly no shortage of jobs.

When it comes to the school - again - repeat - Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE.

1st - READ the contract over very carefully. If that doesn't scare you away then...

The best you can do is minimize the risk by talking to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder). Don't accept non-specific answers and broad generalizations.

No foreign staff references to talk (directly and via e-mail) to = walk away now.

Accept NO EXCUSES for any reason.

ONE CAVEAT: if it is a public school there may not be a Native English Speaker to talk to but there is a chain of command OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL (your POE liaison) if you have problems and they are more strict in following the terms of the contract.

Use as many as you can manage. Do NOT limit yourself to just one.

In the end they are setting YOU up with jobs, so the more you're working with the better.

Over time you'll notice the good ones from the bad ones. The ones that give you the jobs that suit your requests over the ones that give you jobs with lower salaries than you asked, middle of nowhere locations, etc.

I guess the reason I want a recruiter is for someone to help me along in meeting schools. I look at the jobs posted on this site and I just have to wonder about the jobs themselves. It'd be nice to think that some of these recruiters have contacts at good hakwons. There are a few horror stories on here that bother me but I wonder if it's mostly from people who haven't had a real job yet. I am a tax collector for a state government in the U.S. my job is boring and frustrating. I look at a computer all day and talk to people who are afraid, pissed, lying or a combination. I have to think in a few instances here people haven't embraced the job or have not sucked up to your employer enough to get some favorability going. Maybe I am way off base. I also find it to be true in any circumstance that the note that is off key stands out the most. Is there a place to find teachers with POSITIVE experiences? lol

My experiences have been positive, and I'm going to do a second year in Korea. But with recruiters... the "used car salesman" analogy is pretty astute. They aren't trying to find a job that's right for you, they're trying to find a job that you'll take (even if they know it's a lemon). Just go through a few recruiters, pop the hoods on some contracts, and talk to people that are already driving it (current English teachers). I might have taken the analogy a bit far, but you get the idea Very Happy

This seems to be the best approach that people are offering. Talking to the teacher I guess is the main point. I have still have many things to do, get a Tesol cert and what paper work I can get in place before I start shopping for a job. I don't plan on going until atleast the end of May anyways. Due deligence is a good thing of course. Thanks for your advice.

I guess most paper work that I need for a job can't really be done until I am trying to get one? I am holding off on the background check until march so it will stay good through september. Seems like everything else would be for naught until I am a month from wanting to leave.

I agree that you should use as many recruiters as you can. I probably contacted 15- 20 in my search for a couples position 5 months ago. I didn't end up signing with the recruiters i liked the most, I signed with the school i liked the most, and dont regret it.

That being said, I would recommend two recruiters / agencies in particular for their follow up, honestly, friendliness, and commitment to placement at reputable hagwons:

Star Teachers (starteachers.net) I worked with Eunice Kim. She was wonderful, helpful, and honest. Still answered questions after I turned down placement with her.

TEIK (teachenglishinkorea.org) American owned agency. They only place teachers at hagwons where they have gotten positive feedback from former teachers.

hope this helps!

No, it makes their service like selling a used car and you are the mark getting suckered into a lemon if you are not careful.
