Me and my girlfriend just signed our contracts to teach in Gwangju for a year. We have talked to 6 different foreign teachers at the school and all have given great references. We really want to work public school or university positions due to the amount of vacation (And we'd love to travel in southeast Asia for some time.) Is there a way to renew our visa or extend it after we have completed our first year, (without having to go through the WHOLE process again.) It would be much easier than waiting for the background check again and doing all that stuff. What is the maximum amount of time we could be out of Korea in order to extend/renew a visa? Thanks in advance! |

The rules for a visa transfer (as compared to getting a new visa) change a bit on a regular basis AND each case is adjudicated by the immigration officer who is in front of you at the time of the application.
The GENERAL policy is that the contracts must be concurrent, your OLD employer must give permission (LOR) and you still need everything that would normally be required as part of a renewal.
If you want to take a 2 week holiday out of Korea between contracts they may or may not allow the transfer HOWEVER if you transfer then take 2 weeks of "unpaid leave" from your new employer it is a different matter.
There are many various permutations that may or may not occur so planning a transfer this far out is not practical or possible.
Another thing to consider is that even with a transfer you WILL require a complete set of documents (just like the initial visa application) to apply to any public school job (employer requirement not an immigration issue).
Universities have their own requirements so again you may need the documents (and more) for a transfer to a university position even if they are not needed for immigration.
