Just wanted to say hello as a newbie on the forum.

I saw the news today regarding the new ruling that allows for the use of a cellphone that was purchased outside the country by an individual for a private use in Korea as long as they submit a form and without paying any fees. The phone won't have to go through a testing. Also, it seems it will greatly reduce the waiting time of typical 30 days.

It reads that the ruling will go in affect in January.

This will help a lot of people newly coming to the country.

This is exciting news. I have a phone I brought with me from the US last year to use on vacations abroad. Now I can use it in Korea too, and say goodbye to my slider. I hate sliders, more of a clam shell kinda guy.

Hope this pans out.

Does this mean I can bring any phone from the US into Korea and use it without paying the $300 fee or whatever? Or does this only apply to certain phones which would work on non-US cell networks (GSM, etc)?

You won't have to pay the fee. You just submit a form to the appropriate Govt. agency.

Only applies to most phones that have 3G frequency UMTS 2100 (same as WCDMA 2100). The US GSM iPhone works in Korea because it has the WCDMA 2100 frequency.

A lot of Android 3G smart phones have the band. If it's a GSM 3G phone, it probably has the band.

A lot of GSM 3G Blackberry models work in Korea because they usually have the frequency as well.

It seems the new Verizon iPhone only has the 800 and 1900 bands. So, you should check before using it in Korea.

Or, if you have the older Verizon / Sprint phone with the CDMA 1800 band (2G), that will work as well. But, I would make sure your provider still supports the 2G bands.

Please go to Phonescoop.com to find out which frequencies are offered on your US phone.

Where can you get the form and who do you submit it to?

More to the point, why is a news item that is so important to foreigners published only in Korean?

Or is this largely a benefit for Koreans who go overseas shopping to save the 100% markup they have to pay on Korean products here?

The news article hit the print just yesterday. I don't know why it was not published in English.

I would imagine this is due to some complaints from the business sector. But, who knows. Your guess is good as mine.

That's sweet because I just got an unlocked iPhone 4. Am I better off buying a plan over here with roaming, or getting one in Korea?
