E2 expiring..trumps contract?

My friend's E2 visa expires at the end of the month. For some reason his school signed him to an 18month contract, probably hoping he'd re-sign when his visa was initially up.

If he lets the visa expire, can he just leave the country, and then find a job and get another E2 visa?
