...can anyone recommend some must see places?

I have the Lonely Planet for Malaysia but I'm having a hard time narrowing things down to the few days I have in the area.

I'm starting in KL and working my way south.

If you make it to Singapore, I recommend the Night Safari and Little India.

I spent one of the happiest weeks of my life in Singapore just eating non-stop at hawker centres.

I too have been researching this as I'm going in April. If you are into nature there's a national park north of Kuala Lumpur called,Taman Negara national park," and then Cameron Highlands. If going south and you have time, you might as well enter Indonesia overland all the way to Bali. The Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur seems to be the cool affordable central place to sleep, shop, and drink morning coffee in the city.

I was just in both SG and Malaysia...I want to go back!
Honestly, I wouldn't budget much time to see Kuala Lumpur. Singapore has a better Chinatown and Little India as well as hawker centers everywhere. In KL, I definitely recommend taking a trip to the suburbs to see the Batu Caves. That, and the Petronas Towers at night are must-sees.

I spent a day in Malacca but honestly unless you want to relax in a smaller town for a while it's not really a must-see. I wasn't able to see Taman Negara since you really need at least 3 days if you really want to experience the rainforest. There are, however, less wild jungles near the population centers (some nice jungle walks in Singapore even). In Singapore, aside from the night safari, I'd check out the marina area and the skypark.

How would you split a week (days-wise) between the two areas?

My co-worker told me that Kuala Lumpur wasnt very much and that I had too much time to see both KL and Singapore.

just came back from singapore and KL. i really loved KL a lot...i spent 4 days there and could've stayed longer.

i also really loved singapore. only stayed 1 day but i think 3 would be enough (or maybe too much) to see it all. i saw the night safari and zoo and it was pretty good i guess, but not awe-inspiring or anything.

if u wanna splurge a bit in KL, stay at the Traders Hotel. AMAZING view of the Petronas Towers and not THAT expensive, compared to other 5 star hotels.

Yes, agree, 2-3 full days in Singapore is sufficient.

I disagree, though it of course depends on what you want to do. I would not have wanted to leave Singapore after 2-3 days.

Just going off my experience, I'd budget a day and a half for KL and then go on a day trip to the rainforests that are not far from Kuala Lumpur. Probably 2-3 days are fine for Singapore. Beyond that, there is the Cameron Highlands near KL as well as Malacca which should take up a day each at least.

But, if was only going to the cities then I'd stay in Singapore a day or 2 longer than I'd stay in KL.

He/She only has a week. You made good suggestions, but having followed this path half a dozen times the OP would need to multiply their timeframe around tenfold to cover the itinerary you mentioned. Malaysia and Singapore are pretty punctual places, but once you get down into Indo the whole thing is a free-for-all. You'll need to allow significantly more time than you think. Regardless it's a good course you suggested. Have fun.
