ABOUT ONE HUNDRED FOR HAITI:
One Hundred For Haiti (www.onehundredforhaiti.org) has a goal to raise $100,000 for direct action humanitarian aid for the people of Haiti. Funds are focused on a doctor from Port au Prince, Dr. Jacques Denis, who is the director of the Centre de Sante Saint Martin II a clinic serving 60,000 people in the Delmas 4 neighborhood of the city. Since the earthquake, Dr. Denis has been giving away all medicine and medical care for free to the people his clinic serves. One Hundred For Haiti wants to support him with this mission. The earthquake and subsequent natural disasters in Haiti have increased dramatically the number of patients Dr. Denis sees at the clinic. He treats injuries ranging from cholera and other diseases to broken limbs and even does pre-natal care. All of this work is done in conditions would be considered sub-standard by anyone. The people of Port au Prince do not want to go inside of buildings since the quake out of fear. As a result, tents have been set up outside the hospital and it is in these tents that patients are seen and treated. All money will go towards paying for medicine and for the ability of the clinic to continue to function in a way which provides the best possible care to the people of Port au Prince. |

Can I be sure my money goes to employing Haitians to pick-up the rubble which has yet to be cleared up? Mountains of rubble still exist, they are digging out at a very slow rate, bodies are still being found in the rubble. Only 5% of the rubble has been cleared, at that rate it will take 20 years. 20 million dollars of Mack trucks etc...has been donated but sit idle. I think the Haitians themselves need to get to work. |

good point.. not to hijack, but a major reason things in new orleans got so pitiful after Katrina was because a bunch of people were standing around waiting for handouts and charity.
You didn't see people in coastal Mississippi (where the worst part of the storm hit) standing around and you definitely didn't see people on rooftops waiting for a helicopter.
Anyway, the disaster in Haiti sucks.. but at some point people need to help themselves. |

There definitely have been some problems with relief money getting where it needs to be and getting used the way it should. Part of that is because of import taxes in Haiti (the leaders of the Western Hemisphere's poorest country trying to make some money) and laws that restrict foreign companies donating directly to government organizations. Also, it's very hard for foreign companies to get registered as non-profits in Haiti. It really is too bad that exceptions aren't being made to make sure that the people in need get the aid that is available, but it doesn't mean that they're any less in need.
With that said, it doesn't really apply to this. As the information says, if you follow the link, these funds will be going directly to a specific doctor/clinic in Haiti trying to provide 100% free medical services. It won't have all the same hoops to jump through as many other organizations do.
There are definitely some issues with money getting where it needs to be in some cases. This will not be one of those cases. |
