I don't understand why the embassy wants to fleece poor English teachers by charging an outrageous $50 to do a quick notarization. I pay $6 tops, to get a document notarized back in the states. I've written a letter of complaint to my congressman and urge you to do the same, but I digress. Are there any cheaper notaries in Seoul, say in the $10 - $20 range (or less)? What are my options?

I'm nearly positive that the only place you can get a legal US notary in SK is at the embassy. It's been discussed a few times here.

I agree the notarization fee is ridiculous, was lower (but still high) until recently. $30 maybe.

Have your document notarized by a Korean notary and then have the notary signature apostilled by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Legal and acceptable in the US.

From my research, US notaries can't notarize outside the US, except apparently if they're at the embassy. I thought it would be great to get my notary just to be able to notarize things for American friends in Korea.

If you're trying to get a document notarized for Korean immigration in lieu of an apostille, they'll only accept a notarization from a consular officer at the Embassy, anyway. Boo to paying $50 for something I could get done for FREE (or $10 tops for an actual apostille) back home.

How long did it take you to get your document notarized? It took me an hour and a half, and that was after being cut in front of and subsequently bitching to the consular officer, all with a shrill toddler strapped to my back. Confused
