I was having some issues with the search function, so don't get too mad at me if this has been asked before, and please direct me to the thread.

I am a month and a half away from finishing my contract with GEPIK, and I plan on moving back to the states. I know there are a number of financial things that need to be taken care of before leaving, but I'm not 100% sure of everything I need to do. I don't want to end up on a plane back to america and realize I forgot to cash my pension before I left, or something like that.

So what I was hoping, is that everyone could help me make a financial todo list of all the things I should do before I leave the country, especially the American specific stuff (like taxes and what not).

Thanks a bunch for the help, it's very appreciated!

Do you intend to come back to Korea? You can leave your bank account open. I'd say make sure your utility bills are taken care of and close all accounts in your name. Don't forget to file for your pension refund.

Oh, and keep your receipts in case someone claims that you didn't pay your bills.

For God's sake please make sure you pay your bills---phone and utility before leaving. and yes, follow soju's advice about pension.

-ask school about severance and give them your home account info.
-ask school about your deposit (i believe with GEPIK it's 900,000 won - you should receive this after they deduct last month's bills) and when to expect it in your home bank account
-apply for lump sum pension refund (if eligible)
-transfer money home and close account
-airfare reimbursement/travel allowance home
-cancel TV/internet/cell phone plan

that's all i can think of for now. and remember, like another poster, said keep the receipts of your bills.

Also:

- If you are with SK, ask for the 200,000 won deposit back.
- If you are renting your own apartment, you need to get the deposit back
- Sell as much extra stuff as you can, with listings here, Facebook, CL

Not financial, but:

- Get a reference letter
- Get a certificate of employment
