I just walked into my local Nonghyup branch to
make an international bank transfer. The first
thing she did was give me the 'x' sign. This won't
be good I thought.

I asked her to call the interpreter service. The lady
on the phone said that this bank does not do foreign
exchange.

I said no xchange, but bank transfer. She insisted
that not all of their banks can do bank transfers.

Has anyone else had these difficulties ? Is this true ?

I'm thinking a KEB account will be better. Does
KEB bank have these 'some do, some don't' policies ?

Get an ONLINE Nonghyup account and transfer money whenever you want at your convenience. Much easier than going to the main branch and waiting around.
Easy too. Just go in and ask.

I tried the online banking but It would not let me
transfer. It was awhile back, but the person who
set it up gave me confusing insructions. The options
on the page did not allow me to do a transfer.

The options were something about a student account bs
or whatever. The helpline was useless.

It was a royal pain in the ass. New bank for me
KEB VIP here I come.

Yes, this is true. You have to go to the main branch to xfer or purchase foreign currency cash such as dollars.

I think you can only make online transfers with Nonghyup on the Korean language page. But they do give you the option of transferring to an international bank, I know that's for certain.

I've transferred money from the English version of Nonghyup both domestically and internationally.
Once it is set up, it is easy to use. I don't know much Korean, but I was able to sign up without too any problem.
And in option to 'remit' internationally, choose the foreigner option. Not the student or whatever. You are a foreigner remitting wages. Once I figured that out, it was easy.

Get an account at KB. You can make international transfers from the ATM....and it only costs 5000 Won

Go with the other banks on this thread if you are starting out. The Nonghyup is a pain in the a.. to deal with as far as going to the right branch, and simple things like being able to use your international atm card from home (they won't let you at their atms - whereas you can walk to a seven-eleven or mini mart and use them - why can't they just be nice and do it for their foreign customers? - no - they are full of outdated bureaucracy in banking)

i tried to setup online banking with Nonghyup but it was a huge hassle that didn't work even with the help of the Korean clerk - like everything else about the bank, they just have to be difficult - don't bother with them - go to a user-friendly bank

Nonghyup banks are convenient way out here in the country, but I noticed as I get closer to Seoul, there are more KB branches.

Don't go with Shinhan crappy bank!!! (I think they misspelled their bank name with the first "n" instead of "t")

I'm having problems too- I really need to transfer some money back to the UK and though everyone at the bank and on the hotline have been polite and tried to be helpful I'm experiencing everything mentioned in the previous posts. The latest advice is that I 'have the wrong kind of account' and I should have opened my account at the main branch (two blocks away from the sub-branch)!

Back again today to see if I can sort it.

I've had pretty good experiences with the Nonghyup. I just go to the main branch in Cheonan for anything out of the ordinary and have found 2 people that are helpful and speak English.
