Back in the '80s and early '90s Japan was apparently a dumpster diver's dream. The whole culture was about the latest and greatest, much like Koreans and cell phones (apparently Koreans have the shortest ownership periods). The culture also didn't support concepts like "garage sale" or "second hand". Second hand goods might have bad luck from the former or something. The up shoot was for Westerners with limited budgets and no cultural inhibitions, dumpsters around mega apartment blocks were chock a block filled with VCRs, TVs, computers, etc. Japan's economic down turn has apparently put a huge damper on dumpster diving in Japan. Not sure that scene ever developed in Korea.
That said, anyone ever score anything neat in your friendly local dumpster? I don't seem many electronic stuff but sometimes I see some tables, computer desks, etc. End of the month, when people are moving out, seems to be a good time too.

| Mid 90s, pre-IMF, was a good period for electronic goods in Korean dumpsters. I pulled out a full stereo system with a working CD player on one memorable occasion... |

You can get couches, tables, wardrobes and some other cool stuff around apt. complexes. The better (more expensive) said complex, the better the junk.
My old roomie got a stereo that way. |
