I just got my new Canadian passport (which was set to expire in May of this year) and it doesn't have the Visa sticker in it that my previous passport had - it was from 3 years ago and I've just kept renewing.

In any case, will this be a problem at all when I take my trip to Canada at the end of this month? I know I no longer need a re-entry permit with the new changes in regulation, but upon return, do I simply show my new passport sans Visa stamp and ARC card?

I'm cutting it close actually, my Visa expires the 28th of Feb., and i'm returning the 27th...wonder if I'll get any hassles over that. But I mean, my current school who I'll be renewing with keeps telling me it'll be fine, and that re-signing with the same school is a quick and easy process...meh.

I had this situation when I renewed my passport. It was no big deal that the visa was in my old passport. I would recommend trying to get your visa/contract renewed before travelling, I renewed mine like 3 weeks in advance. I think you get an automatic 1-month visa extension at the end of your contract now, but you might be able to renew early.

Passport Canada does NOT put anything into your passport when you get a new one - nor are they allowed to. You get a spanky clean new one.

NOW:

You have 14 days from the date you get your passport (hope you kept the receipt) or 14 days from date of issue (if you didn't keep your receipt) to report the change to immigration.

They will update your computer file.

Failure to do so CAN and often does result in a fine of 100k won.

Your ARC will serve as your re-entry (proof of Korean residence so the airline should let you board) to get back to and re-enter Korea. Don't lose it.

Returning with one day left on your ARC is risky (you risk being placed in an overstay position). You should renew/extend BEFORE you leave. You can extend an E2 up to 60 days prior to your expiry.

that was really helpful guys! thanks a lot for the info!

unfortunately, i'm going to have to take a chance on getting back into the country with one day remaining on my visa...yikes. i wonder if having some kind of "official" documentation to prove i'm re-signing with my current school will help...it just seems like there won't be enough time to get this all done before i leave. the principal is gone until the end of the month, and i leave as he's coming back in, and i don't get in 'til the 27th of february. i'm stressin' out! i've already discussed with the school that on the 28th, I'll head to the office and all the documents will be ready in an envelope and at that point i'd head straight to immigration and get the renewal done. i mean...it'll technically be done in time. but yeah, not so much worried about that as the hassle by immigration at the airport. wish me luck!

actually, i just read your post more closely...i'll def. extend my visa in the coming days just so i don't hafta deal with a single day remaining on my visa when i return.

I had the same situation in '09. I was told the ARC is all that's needed but carried my old passport around with my new one just in case. I have never needed to show the old passport even with two trips out of country. So don't worry. Tote it around if you want a security blanket.
