I have read from some recruiters that having different names on parts of your diploma, CBC etc etc may cause problems. My dilemma is that my real name is Joseph (same as fathers, sometiems I am represented as Jr. such as DL) but I go by Joey. My diploma and transcripts have this name on them. The CBC and such would have Joseph, along with my passport. What kind of trouble did anyone have in a similar situation? I have always gone by Joey and when I could, used it officially to differentiate myself from my father. Now I suppose there will be a few hoops to get this cleared through.

Get the university to reissue the diploma and change your name on the records to Joseph. Problem solved.

My friend works at a University here helping foreign students come and study, and she ran into that problem - this student used a nickname/short form at the university, but her legal name was on her birth certificate and passport, etc. That's what they ended up doing - changing the name to the full, legal name at the university.

how did your uni issue your diploma in anything but your official name? i believe you, as you are being faced with this admin nightmare right now, but its strange that your school went with "joey" and not "joseph."

i wasnt given a choice. my name on all of my degrees is printed in full, which has caused me similar problems as the name on some of my publications does not match my full, legal name. i always submit all official/academic documents in my full, legal name but the other end sometimes takes the liberty of shortening it for me because my name is quite long. I registered with the name Joey. I don't know how I got away with it to be honest. The administrative branch of my school was somewhat for notorious for being incompetent. They probably never checked it all the way through.

I was wondering about the same thing. However, one some of my documents my middle name is included, other times not. Would a middle name be a problem (as opposed to a variant of a given name)?

Every time i've graduated, I've been given the option of what name I want to put on my diploma - the options limited, of course, to middle name/no middle name, Nathan, Nate, Nathaniel, etc. I think it's pretty common. You spend a lot of time, energy, and money to get a degree, so if you want your name that people call you on it, they'll generally let you do it.

im not sure. in the past, variations of given names and/or excluded middle names werent a big deal but in the paranoid age ... you should ask one of the many experienced long-timers here, some of whom i believe own hagwon and hire their employees themselves.

sorta OT, but an old friend from grad school recently came to visit me and had an even stranger problem. he doesnt have a middle name, and the name on his passport is "James NMI Jones" (not his real name!). the name on his plane ticket was "JONES/JAMESMR." he was hassled about it by dhs but immigration at incheon didnt bat an eye.
