Answer: Not if you want your last pay check(s) and a relatively stress-free last day(s)/week(s)/month(s). Keep playing nice, quietly plan your exit, collect your money and go.

Thanks for the advice. I guess if it comes down to me being screwed out of a whole paycheck or my co-workers getting screwed by picking up my classes for a month, I'll take the latter.
Still doesn't feel right though.

Doesn't feel right..... because you want to do the right thing.... we all do, but for whatever reason/s (known only to you in the particulars, but familiar to all in general), you want out. legit/not legit reasons?.... It's impossible to judge and up to the individual anyway. the decision is made.
I would never risk being ripped off. btw, from the 1st to payday will not be paid to you. It's a lose big-lose a little gamble. Take the sure thing.
Collect, Jet, Report (if warranted), Relax.
You're paid on the 15th or the 10th for the previous month's work anyway. They've structured it as a hedge, because that's a reality they may have to deal with .......

I remember my second job in Korea. The recruiter promised each side something different. At the end of the day they refused to send me for the visa run. At the same time, I was good enough to keep teaching especially over the summer. So, I stated that I'd might as well go home in which I was threatened with a lawsuit! I doubted the sincerity of the threat since I was technically an illegal.
Anyway, I found another school and they did the face saving thing. So, I stayed and finished that contract.
My point? If you want to leave. Just leave. The same goes for staying. |

Yeah, if you're going to do a runner, don't do it half-assed... you'll just be making your life hell.
On the other hand, the fact that your employer will make your life hell sort of helps you deal with any potential guilt... I did a runner elsewhere and thought it would be decent to let them know I just wasn't happy there and would be leaving-- and yes, things went downhill pretty quickly.
But really, all that the nastiness did was alleviate me of my guilt... they can't force you to provide a quality service if they're riding you... and it also meant that I had no reservations about picking up and leaving forever, one random morning... much earlier than I told them that I would leave. I even left a note in my apartment, explaining to them how they could prevent this from happening in the future.
If you don't have a visa, there's really nothing stopping you... except some misplaced sense of 'obligation'. But really, we're talking about a year of your life here, and if you know you can do better, then why waste a year in a place that isn't what it was supposed to be? |

Came back home and got a well-paying job in my field with great benefits in 3 days. No more psychotic jealous stale-kimchi smelling slag Korean Woman "manager", no more fall-out from severe mismanagement being blamed on me, no more sub-standard living conditions, no more foul air, no more having to deal with group-think/group-do behaviors, no more widespread ignorance and extreme narrow-mindedness, no more crap buildings with crap insulation, no more kimchi farts, puddles, or smells, no more having to step gingerly around the psychologically fragile "Woe Is Me/Us" average Korean person. Yeah! |

Plus, if you intend to come back later, you can just leave the money with the pension office and claim it the next time that you're in Korea. |

If you are going to leave and NOT planning to come back, do a midnight run. So many foreigners get screwed in Korea, it's not a matter of ethics. To most Koreans, we're just something to help them line their pockets. There are no ethics in this rat race, mediocre country!
Even if you've known and worked with Koreans for years and consider them your friends, the knives in the back will start falling in a heartbeat. I've been thru a nightmare situation of my own, and over the years and have seen many others. Basically it comes down to screw them before they screw you. You are not one of them, and you will never be.
My advice, make your decision, then quietly and efficiently go about it and leave. DON'T get homesick for this place and want to come back! |

I would have to agree about that. There is nothing you are going to gain by giving them notice. The idea that somehow if you do that you will be screwed is BS.
If you went to Thailand you could pick up temporary work pretty easily to earn some extra cash while you are there. If you plan a bit ahead you could do the same going to Japan.

If you got a better opportunity you should take it. You go back to the states no one is going to be calling overseas on your references anyhow, so if you can do better for yourself you should put yourself first.
You are not a slave you are a human being. You are not a traded commodity- you have rights. All you are doing is exercising your rights.
Make sure your new employer is going to "put pressure" to get your new visa done in short order. That pressure can make it go real fast- and the lack of it can make it take much longer. |
