I was wondering if anyone had lived in Eun Pyeong Gu.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks-

I live in Eungam dong Eungpyung gu. Its a bicyclists dream. My house is about a 5 minute ride from Bulgwang stream which has a dedicated bike trail all the way to the han river. If you hang a right theirs a bicycle park that was built by Giant bicycles, it has a street racing mini circuit and a dirk bike challenge track. Coming back you cant hit Hong Jay Stream for another dedicated bike trail that leads you up to around nok beon station. Eungpyung also seems to be alot cheaper than other areas of seoul. Fried chicken is 8,000 won, sam gyupsal 3500-4500 for the cheap stuff. Lots of good traditional style korean restaurants. Had Hand made soft tofu soup in a huge pot for 5,000 yesterday. Eungpyung is also like 35 min by subway from Itaewon. 20 min from Hongdae or Jogno 3 ga.

But that being said theirs also the negative aspects. Eungpyung gu is the slum of korea its one of the poorest gu's in seoul. Housing in Eungpyung gus on the up and up development wise but their are alot of slums too. Not to mention hordes of drunken belligerent older korean men. I am currently awaiting resititution from a drunken guy who decided to tackle me from behind slamming my head into a brick wall, which resulted in a cracked skull and about 80 percent skin loss on my knees. Graciously he confessed in the police station to doing it but is now refusing to pay any damages despite the attack being unprevoked.

Summary: I like Eung-am and Eungpyung. Im the proud owner of a Cannondale Road bike that I terrorize the streets of Eunpyung Gu on daily. If you can learn a bit of Korean, and Enjoy the more traditional style drinking joints/restaurants its an awesome place. Shinchon, Yeonsinnae, hell even Sinsa O Keolli are great places to go boozing. Their are very very few foreigners here but if you decide to make it your home send me a PM. I'd be happy to show you some of the better places of Eungpyeong.

T.C.

Beware the drunken adjeosshi.

I live in Eung Am dong, Eunpyoung gu. It is indeed a poorer part of Seoul, but supposedly getting better. According to one of my Korean friends she said "when I was growing up, Eunpyoung gu was much worse, so my family moved away, but now I would move back to Eunpyoung gu now that it's nicer". The apartments are pretty cheap. My school put me in a brand new building, and I know it's nothing too expensive. I haven't found any great restaurants, even great Korean restaurants. Where I used to live in Seoul wasn't such a great area either, but I think it still had better food.

The area is a nightmare if you are NOT a bicyclist and you enjoy walking on the sidewalk and not getting hit by people on bicycles. I can't tell you how many times I have been hit by idiots riding their bicycles like jackasses on the sidewalk or on the streets, or how many times I have seen idiots hit into other people just trying to walk on the sidewalk. It is a major problem here.

As was already said, it is close to Hongdae, and not that far from Itaewon. Also it's close to a bunch of parks, World Cup Stadium and those parks, plus the parks in Gupabal and the nearby mountains. Other than that, there isn't much that sets it apart or makes it anything special.

i lived in eungam and i loved it. i love the stream, i love the big parks and mountains, i love the huge emart being so close (it's bigger than most). it is a poorer area, but that didn't give me a negative experience there.
living on line 6 and getting to hongdae and itaewon without transferring is fantastic.

it really depends on your style and what you're looking for in a gu. if you're more specific with your preferences, we can address them.

good luck!

I am indeed a bicyclist, but I'm still worried that the apartment / little neighborhood will suck.

I might send a PM to you folks when I get there.

-Thanks

I just moved here to Eungam, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. There's only 1 western teacher at my school with me as of now, and I'm desperate to meet some more people this weekend. My apartment is a lot bigger than I was expecting, because I guess it's cheaper here. Email me if you want to meet up soon.

my eungam officetel last year was fantastic.

like zackman said, your apt can be bigger since the rent in the area is cheaper. housing can be great or horrible in most parts of seoul.

my gf lives in eungam so I go there a lot to see her off at night. It is more ghetto than other parts of seoul, but not the kind of ghetto where you have to look over your back every 10 seconds (unless you're a girl). we usually go to worldcup stadium and surrounding parks which are spacious and nice. Lots of kids and families riding their bikes, walking, picnic-ing, etc. The bulgwang-chun, kind of like chungye-chun in central seoul, starts at eungam station and goes down to world cup stadium and then to the han river. As mentioned earlier, there is an emart. Other than that it's a very 'meh' place. Don't expect foreign food. Do expect drunk homeless people around the eungam station area.

I also lived in Eungam-dong last year. I really liked being so close to E-Mart. I could get there in less than 5 minutes. I was also really close to the subway and the stream. It was nice being super close to Kimbap Heaven and GS25. Those were literally next door to my officetel.

The stream is nice. I really liked my officetel.

I liked the area. I thought it was nice, but I grew up in a very small town so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

I really enjoyed living there and I plan to return to Eungam-dong in March.

Isn't that like... the same regardless? I saw 17 Gs25's and 12 7/11's in between two mountains, and nothing else for miles, once.

I lived in Eungam-dong for 3 years, although I left there in 2007 or 8. I only saw about a dozen foreigner sightings per year, but that's a + for me. Yonshinnae was like a mini Hongdae back then, and living next to Bulgwang Cheon was great for cycling to the World Cup stadium and on to the Hangang.

I really liked living there and we were going to buy an apartment in Eunpyeong New Town until we decided to move back to Hongdae.

The area around Eungam Emart was certainly not dull. It depends where you end up living i suppose.

I have lived within a three minute walk from Eungam station for over three years, and I have no idea about these drunk homeless people you are talking about.
