You are in Korea right now. Your new director tells you that a visa run to Japan (or some other foreign country) is necessary. That it will require you to stay in a foreign country for 5 days.
In the past, when getting new E-2 visas, I made the visa run by going to Japan for 2-4 days. Never 5 days.
Is there something I am missing here?
I don't want to spend the money that 5 days in Japan will likely cost (hotels, food, etc.). But perhaps more importantly, the last teaching day of my present contract is Feb. 25th, 2011. I don't want to shortchange my present boss (if possible) of any teaching days and I also don't want to start late on my new job (necessitating 'make-up days').
Anyone have any experience changing over visas? Is there any reason it ought to take longer than just getting a regular E-2?
Basically, I don't want to plan and budget for more days than I really need to.

E1, E2 and E7 are overnight affairs in Osaka and Fukuoka (ASSUMING you have a visa confirmation number). In by 2pm out the next day at 2pm.
Typically 4-5 days in Tokyo.
Unless something has changed significantly in the last week, there is no reason for it to take 5 days.
Perhaps your director checked the embassy website rather than the consulate for time lines?
