Hi,

Would anybody know anything about Masan?
I'm being offered a job with the GnB Institute and I haven't been able to find anything about masan on these forums. I was looking for changwon but with no luck yet.

Particularly any info on social life there.

(I'm from Dublin, Ireland, so I quite like the idea of living near a brewery ...)

The Gyeongsangnamdo Immigration Office is in Masan, so you won't have far to go for your ARC or an extension. It's not that far by bus from either Busan or Changwon (C'won, for your POE). About 1 hour to both.

Not sure about Masan, but Changwon which has plenty of things going on, is pretty close by though (10 to 15 minute drive?)

Oh yeah, plenty. There's also a CGV, a Pizza Hut, lots of PC-bangs, singing rooms / rooms salons and love hotels. It's got two bus terminals so you can get a bus to just about anywhere. It's also got an amazing new bridge that was featured on Discovery Channel. And fish ... a big fish market and lots of different types of fish restaurants.

http://wiki.galbijim.com/Masan

From memory, it was around 25 minutes by taxi from Changwon to Masan. I don't think it's possible in 10-15 minutes. I suppose a bus would take around 35-45 minutes? More, if the traffic is bad.
That whole area of Korea is more like Japan, than Korea. Clean, neat & orderly, with new, modern infrastructure. The Changwon bus terminal, eg.

I lived in Masan for two years, currently living in Incheon. As people have said Masan is connected to Changwon to the point where the two cities bleed into each other. Masan has three cinemas and three down town areas. They have a train station and four fucking bus terminals. I really enjoyed my time there and the expact community is a little bit more laid back than in huge cities. They have two expat bars; one in Chang Dong named "Joyces" and the other in Shin Masan named "Jazz" Changwon also has a half-decent expat scene that's worth exploring. Have fun and enjoy your year.

I'm going to be starting at a public elementary school about 10-15 km outside of Masan, just curious what you guys can tell me about Samgye-ri. I think that's where I'll be living. Is this a new and developing enclave on the outskirts of Masan? Will it be a huge pain in the rear finding local choices of places to eat? I can't eat at the Gimbap place every meal. I'm a little worried about this...

Just thought I post here about Masan.

I teach in Haman which is about 20 minutes west of Masan by bus and I also live there. However, I do visit Masan usually every week. As posted before, there are three downtowns so there's plenty in terms of restaurants, supermarkets and movie theaters. Never really checked out the expat scene but it seems like others have vouched for it.

Concerning Samgye-ri, it's in the western portion of the county in Jung-ri. It's near Masan College and many buses go there from the city center and from Changwon, including the red express buses (710 and 752). There's also a train station there and there are about 10 trains a day that stop there. There are bars, restaurants (ate at a really good meat restaurant there but have seen many others), high-rise apartments, a massive fresh market and a few foreign teachers there too. It's also newly developed, so it's not as dirty, noisy and crowded as the old Masan downtown. It's a bit closer to Changwon in terms of development. Also, there's some good hiking to be had there with Muhaksan.

Hey Hank,

What can you tell me about life in Haman? I've got an interview coming up regarding a teaching position there. I've been aiming to get a job closer to Seoul, but I've been coming up empty so I might just go for this one.

I imagine you spend plenty of time travelling to bigger cities. How much does it cost to get to Busan via bus?

Any info would help me out, and feel free to PM me if necessary. (I don't have enough posts to do it myself yet)
