I want to ask the people on this board about their opinion of their home country. What are you proud of and what are you ashamed of?
Proud:
Peaceful independence from England
Upholding and respecting England's traditions while still being separate
Being a mostly tolerant country
Our national debt and deficit being one of the lowest in the developed world
Truly beautiful nature
Relatively well-run country
One of the world's longest lifepsans
Not participating in the Iraq war
Polyglot society
Not proud:
The residential school system for First Nations and our history related to First Nations
The current policies on First Nations
The situation in the northern territories
Marijuana and marijuana culture
Some of our past leaders, such as Trudeau and Chretien
The separatist movement
An economy far too dependent on natural resources
East Hastings Street in Vancouver
Certain Canadians (Ben Johnson, Christopher Paul Neill)
Feel free to argue with me or post your own list. I am sure I left out a few points on both lists. |

This won't end well.
I'll happily have this conversation in person over a few beers, but internet forums tend to be ridiculous when it comes to these topics. |

Bohol, you're from the prairies? Maybe an Albertan?
I'm from Alberta and I am probably one of only 2 Albertans that liked Trudeau and Chretien.
Ain't going to argue with you but I just want to say that Canada has got to get rid of the monarchy. I hate seeing the head of a foreign country on our money and there is no benefits for it. If the Brits allowed all Canadians to work, and live, in the UK unrestricted, as British subjects, then I might reconsider. |

Yup, I'm in no rush to get involved in this kind of inevitable p**sing contest. I'll just say that, like you, I have mixed feelings about my home country (the US) which I'd be happy to discuss in person.
I will say that I've always thought patriotism was a vaguely ridiculous notion. Why be blindly proud of a place just because you were born there? I love my country, but I'm not unconditionally proud of it, and I can see its flaws as well as its strengths. |

I'd be more proud if it wasn't full of tools who like to go on and on about it. |

I agree 100%. It's one of the things about Korea that drives me nuts. They really like to pat themselves on the back because of the hard work and achievements of others. |

I want to address the replies to my thread.
Though I did not create my country, I am part of it. If a country is great, it is probably full of great people. There are great people everywhere. You can be proud without taking credit for something.
I also wrote an equally long list of things I am not proud of, showing some balance.
Jvalmer: I am from Saskatchewan. I am surprised anyone from the west could like Trudeau. Not only that, I am a PC supporter.
As far as the Queen goes, I don't see what we lose to keep he as a symbol in our country. I am sure it costs us some, but diplomacy comes at a price. We don't need to eliminate our old traditions just to define ourselves.
Waynehead: I agree. I am not proud of everything, as I mentioned earlier.
As forked upas the US is, I think they have a lot to be proud of. Koreans too. Almost anyone.

The word proud is pretty weird. In some contexts it actually refers to pride (I'm better than others because...) while it's perfectly okay to tell someone you're proud of them. Slip that "of" in there and you're fine. |

I used to be proud of Canada about 10 years ago but now the immigration policy has turned me off.
They seem to let ANYONE with alot of money in...people with little morals. I'd bet 1 in 10 new immigrants couldn't tell you 3 things about Canada and 1 in 2 would say to your face that they don't like the country and are just using it to move on.
