While doing research on AIDS in Korea for a class this week I found the following article.

The Korea Herald wrote:
Recently, a shock wave was sent through Korean society when a prostitute, who was diagnosed with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in 1998, was discovered to have continued work for 18 months afterwards, not realizing the infectious nature of her condition.

In what the media called "AIDS terror," the woman in her 20s was told she was HIV positive at a public health center, but doctors failed to tell her what it meant. All she knew was that she looked healthy, so she went on with her usual life. Unfortunately, the woman may be one of many Koreans who still remain ignorant of the disease.

Got on to the topic of AIDS during my adult class who consist of some of Korea's finest physicists and was completely shocked at the response.

One scientist informed me that Jesus had sent down Aids to punish homosexuality. On closer questioning, he explained that it is possible for a gay couple to get Aids even if they were virgins, had not used dirty needles, or had a blood transfusion - with the mere fact that they were homosexual being enough to contract the disease.

When people give me that kind of argument, I tell them what I learned in a college health class. The probability of certain populations catching AIDS, which totally follows common sense, is 1) gay men that engage in anal sex or a hetero woman that has anal sex with a man then 2) a woman who has intercourse sex with a man, then 3) a man having intercourse with a woman, and lastly 4) 2 lesbians that have sex together. If they really think that all gay people are bad and AIDS was sent to punish them, why do women that are gay get HIV and then AIDS much less than the hetero population? It's all about fluid exchange and parts of the body that are more prone to abrasions or collecting fliud than others.

But I guess if this guy thinks that gay virgins can catch AIDS he may be a lost cause.

Because pop culture says lesbians are cool. Has the media taught you nothing?

Right--but the people that use the 'AIDS was sent down to kill homosexuals' argument or a religious based argument don't buy into the pop culture thing. And there are a number of pop culture representations of gay men these days that are favorable too. ('Will and Grace', and 'Melrose Place' to name a few.)

I've been tested twice in Korea. Once about 3 months ago, and another time just last week.

This because in a prior relationship, the woman told me she used to work at a bar near a train station (Cheongnyamni). Thing is, she told me that when I first got here and we began dating, and didn't have a clue as to what that could possibly mean. Was she a prostitute? I don't know. But learning more about the train station areas since then prompted me to check for sure. She is/was a teacher when we met. Sure, I could have just up and asked her more that now, but due to complexities of the situation, I didn't want to.

Both tests were negative. The reason I had 2 was because the doctor said there is a 6 month period after intercourse where HIV may not show up. The first time I was with the woman was around 9 months ago, so I feel pretty safe now.

Getting this weird Pneumonia thing I've had scared me a bit into the second test as well.

I had one test at the International Clinic located across from the Manhattan Restaurant in Itaewon. The second at Yonsei hospital. If you have Korean Medical Insurance, the cost is pretty cheap -- I think between 10 and 15,000 won.

I did ask the doctor at the other Itaewon International Clinic about AIDS in Korea once. He said that at his clinic, they have found 9 people testing positive with HIV. Of those people, seven were from Africa, and the other two were homosexuals. He said I probably don't have much cause to worry.

I still worried.

Very scary. A teacher I work with told me that the first sex/health class she ever had was in college. Thats what scars me the most...the society just seems to ignore all the problems that plauge the modern world. I had my first sex/health class in 6th grade...of course they taught abstinance, but at least we were all made aware of the problems.
Its amazing that there are not more AIDS cases in this country.

Truth of the matter is that it is extremely unlikely for a man to catch HIV from a women having "normal" unprotected sex. There are a dozen or so other diseases that can be easily contracted but HIV is not one of them. Even though sex education is a necessity, this misinformation has been exaggerated. I read recently that the chances are about 1 in 3, 000.

Um, can we please get the basics straight on this thread - HIV is the virus, AIDS is the outcome eventually - saying that - I've been HIV+ for just over 10 yrs now (I did tell long ago in another thread). Kimchee, saying AIDS in Korea was very naive of you. HIV in Korea would have been a better story starter. I don't have AIDS. I take the pills as and when need be. Touch wood - still quite healthy.
