Yes, last time I was there was 2001. There are two schools, one in Duho Dong and one a bit further out, can't remember the name of the dong. I was at Duho Dong which I think was lucky, it sounded like we had the better set up and better environment. Housing was ok, not amazing, but not bad. It was big enough, with all the usuals, but not so new.
They're not very consistant, for example I lived 2 min walk from work, but others had to take a 20 min drive. In Duho Dong your boss will be Mrs Park Lim. She's good, she's the daughter of the owner Mr Park, who is not so great but he hardly comes in. They're a serioius and established business and several people at Duho Dong were returners which is a good sign. There were split shifts, start 9:30 then two hour lunch break and finish 6:30 which got tiring. There was also Saturday morning work which was rotated around the teachers, three months on three months off. Only I got d*cked, can't remember how, and I did it the whole time. The teachers at the other school didn't seem to stay so long. Mr Park also has a Kindy thing, and several other businesses. Once he asked some of us to work at the Kindy too and we refused.
Basically it's a good place. I'd go for it but keep your wits about you. At the end of my contract they found out that I was staying in Korea to work at a uni. So Mr Park said that because I wasn't going home to NZ that he was going to pay for my ticket to Japan for a new visa and that would fulfill his obligation regarding the ticket home. Of course, a ticket to NZ is a LOT more than one to Japan. I said no way, and things got a bit unpleasant with him. I made him give me the ticket money in cash, and it was quite a bit less than the several quotes I had gotten from travel agents. Then he refused to give me my letter of release. Luckily I was applying for work in a uni, and my new boss had a contact in immigration so I got away without the letter. I don't like Mr Park, and neither did a lot of us there. He's old school, owns lots of other businesses around town, and there were suggestions that he was connected. I mean, here's a big time business man, owns lots of businesses, brings in millions, and he does his accounts with a pen and paper in the back room. I caught him once when heading out for a smoke. He gave me an ambarrased grin.
But whatever, don't stress about that. I would take it, it will be good. Just keep on the right side of all the staff, and the boss, and keep your eyes open. The bigger question is whether you want to live in Pohang or not. |
