hi all. well, as the thread says, i'm an EPIK teacher, and i've proposed to my lovely lady of 2 years. pending parents' approval everything should be good to go.
what i'm wondering is if anyone else is in this situation and what i might have to be ready for. i ready something in the EPIK manual about not being able to qualify for a visa if i'm married (!?!), but if anyone has advice or can point me to some websites that have advice, it's appreciated.
thanks! |

Grandmother's advice: "Marry in haste, repent at leisure."
Good luck. |

Getting married, in and of itself, won't change your visa status nor will it change your status at your school as far as continued employment is concerned.
It will change your status a little in terms of relating to your co-workers (married is not single - you move up a step).
AFTER you are married you can jump through the hoops to get an F2 visa (rather than your E2) and that will make your life with immigration a lot easier (no more E2 hoops to worry about after this).
You will be able to add your wife to your NHIC medical as well (no addition to the premium) and your taxes will drop (with the addition of a dependent).
Good luck with the parents.

IF your wife is a dependent, you get a tax break. If she has annual income of as little as 1.5 million she won't qualify as a dependent. Is your fiance planning on quitting her job the week before the wedding and living a life of luxury on your bottomless EPIK salary?
Good luck with the wedding! Got married to my long-time girl last year, loving life. |

At first I thought this was a wedding announcement for the poster with the handle, "EPIKteacher". Which was shocking to me.
But after reading it, congrats!
You'll definitely want to get that F2 before your E2 expires. No more visa runs etc...
Additionally, you'll want to register your marriage at your embassy. This requires some translated documents. There should be a translator service near your embassy that can do everything within a few minutes. |

May I add that marriage isn't word, it's a sentence. |

Generally people pressure you to get married so that you become as miserable as they are. |

Marriage is overrated. I rather be like the scandinavians and have kids out of wedlock and live with my partner. It's really common over there these days. |

Keep in mind that after seven years of that (at least in the U.S.) you get married automatically by common law.
And in the seven years until that happens, you're missing out on some big tax breaks and also some important rights, especially in the case of any kind of medical emergency happening to your partner. I guess the pro is that during that time you can decide to break up and move out and not have to pay any alimony. |

NZ couples living together have common law marriage rights etc after 2 years. |

Enjoy the herpes coming your way! |
I wasn't talking about Americans, I was referring to the Scandinavians. |

OP, I hope you're still there (and single). I couldn't resist this:
"By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher" (Socrates).
Good luck. |

thanks for the replies and well wishes everyone. it looks like i don't have much to worry about.
on a related topic (though maybe this deserves it's own thread), anyone know how long an EPIK teacher can stay at the same school? is the same 4 years the Koreans get? or is it indefinite? just curious if anyone knows. |
