"There was that jarring week in December - a protest against Arab-Jewish couples, a south Tel Aviv march and demonstration against migrant workers and African asylum seekers, the arrest of Jewish teenagers accused of beating Palestinians and the expulsion of five Arab men from their home in south Tel Aviv. It left me with the question: What is next?"

"Another alarming act of violence took place in south Tel Aviv that same night. The Hotline for Migrant Workers, an Israeli NGO, reports that three teenage girls - Israeli-born, Hebrew-speaking daughters of African migrant workers - were beaten by a group of Jewish teenagers. The attackers, one of whom was armed with a knife, allegedly called them "dirty niggers".

"Along with the leaflets, there was singing, shouting and speeches, which I translated for my colleague. Several times, I stopped mid-sentence. I could not believe what I had heard. Did that man really say that Jewish women who date Arab men should be sentenced to death? Did that rabbi really say that the Jewish people have "holy blood"?

- Sounds familiar?....

Israelis are pretty paranoid about Arabs.

My friend is an educated Moroccan that works for a large multinational company. Overall standup citizen and nice guy. This guy gets racially profiled everywhere he goes.

He once flew on El-Al, an airline whose security is notorious for its profiling of non-Jews.

El-Al security interrogated him for 2 hours. Strip search, took all of his belongings. He was my roommate at that point, all they left him was his passport and the clothes he had on. I had to pay for his cab when he got home because he literally had nothing on him.

Eventually they returned all his stuff but kept his iPod and other items and returned some of his stuff partially damaged (camera lens, computer, etc.)

He travels a lot so, although he doesn't always get the "El-Al" treatment, he pretty much has to go through 50% more "security" to get to wherever he's going.

It also sucks because he pretty much has to get a separate visa for any country he wants to visit, something a lot of us westerners take for granted since we have visa free travel to most countries. If not, we have to pay a nominal fee to get a visa the same day or a few days max.

But, still, he never complains about any of it. Takes everything in stride.

Are you kidding me?

Korea pays teachers a nice salary. Think about women who make way less than men in most countries. Women are way more discriminated against in Korea than English teachers are.

No I think you meant Korea is tied second with Australia, US, UK, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand. Am I right?... Rolling Eyes

I always love how the formerly persecuted manage to find it in their hearts to persecute so many others.

Everyone knows about Israel being a terrible place, though... I thought everyone knew anyway.

At least they don't have an ongoing supremest organisation by the name of ㅋ ㅋ ㅋ.

No, no it's not. It's nowhere near.

The Middle East is a cesspool. If the US pulled it's support from Israel then they'd start looking like Afghanistan in a couple of years. I hope they're grateful to have a first world country only because the US is propping up their whole economy. Culturally, they're nowhere near being first world. The same with Saudi Arabia.

I agree with this quote from the movie Syriana about Saudi Arabia (sums up how I feel about Israel and other artificially wealthy countries as well):

Twenty years ago you had the highest Gross National Product in the world, now you're tied with Albania. Your second largest export is secondhand goods, closely followed by dates which you're losing five cents a pound on... You know what the business community thinks of you? They think that a hundred years ago you were living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other's heads off and that's where you'll be in another hundred years, so on behalf of my firm I accept your offer.

Systematized, covert racism is at times a great deal more damaging and ultimately more devastating than overt racism. (Stressing at times)....
Stigmatization has been found to be even worse than physical pain or overt discrimination.

In terms of this, I'd have to say we need to re-interpret OP's notion of racism and its impact on the world. Then go through some ranking methodologies before we assume Korea's low or far from top on the list.

I've been called a "nigger" and I kid you not when I say, it had much less impact on me than some of the things I've experienced first hand here and on a daily basis.

Haters will always hate.

Why everyone seems to believe that everyone else should love them is beyond me. Hate me if you want. Hate me because I'm Korean-American.

Don't knife me and don't rip me off and don't spit in my food. That's all I ask.

Deny me entrance to your overpriced bar, fine. Glare at me, fine. Say bad things in your native language, fine. Portray me negatively in the media, fine. Make me the butt of jokes, fine.

Just don't mess with my money or my body and we're cool. I may argue with you or whatever, but as long as you aren't stealing that's fine.

In fact, better that your honest and open about it. Once we get past calling each other racial slurs we can sit down and talk about how women, young people, Jimmie Johnson, and Ohio State all suck and beer is good and eat some meat off the grill.

Why is the guy who carries a murse having to lecture this forum and how to take things like a man?

Do you find Koreans to be less overt but more judging when it comes to stuff like that? Or do they actually say stuff? I've noticed that of all the racism I've experienced here, most of it is usually subtle and indirect (aside from a couple of times an ajosshi went batsh*t for me going into their shop).

This is going to sound insensitive but I'm glad I'm white and not black in Korea.
