Regulations of Bribery Strengthened Ahead of Teacher's Day
The Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption (KICAC) announced Monday that the committee along with the Offices of Education and other related organizations will enforce joint investigations on elementary, junior high and high school teachers on receiving bribes ahead of Teachers' Day, starting May 6 to 15. According to the current general principles on public service personnel on regulating their actions, students and parents are allowed only to deliver simple presents such as flowers, souvenirs and cakes in an open place.
A KICAC official said, "We will seriously censure teachers who are caught during investigations and we requested the parents to restrain themselves from providing any money to the teachers."

What qualifies as a souvenir or as simple. What about a 50,000 won tea set? What about a Korean car? |

Good old fashioned Korean bribery - alive and well. Some traditions never die, even in this era of "progressive" change. |
