MANILA, Philippines (AP) Authorities stepped up security at bus terminals, ports and airports Wednesday as officials suspected Muslim militants could be behind a bus bombing that killed five people in the bloodiest attack in the capital in six years.
National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) police director Nicanor Bartolome said investigators had recovered parts of a remotely detonated improvised bomb that resembles similar devices used by militants in the volatile southern Philippines, where minority Muslims have been fighting for self-rule for decades.

That stinks. The security situation is really bad in the Phils. I was there just last weekend and the environment was very tense like everyone knew the risk for terrorism and crime was high. I never seen so many security checkpoints in my life and felt spooked. Now I know the threats they fear are very real and it's necessary to take every precaution there. You not only have terrorists, you are also exposed to crime risks like assault, mugging, petty theft, and even kidnapping for ransom. The worst I experienced was 10 year olds blatantly trying to pickpocket me in Baclaran market and one even hopping into my jeepney to shine my sneakers. Poor homeless kids are desperate for food so they will do anything for a peso or corrupt criminals use them to scrounge up money to finance their vices. Probably both is happening. Boracay is safe, because the Muslim Vendors Association controls the business side of things, security can control and monitor everyone entering, and the corrupt terrorists probably have financial interests there as the money is obviously going off-island instead of maintaining and improving it.
I feel bad for the Filipino people of the cesspool of fear, crime, and corruption they have to live in. The situation for the kids made me cry. |

Yipes! I'm going to the Philippines next week!
I know Boracay will be fairly safe, it's flying through Manila Airport that I'm more worried about. |
