Been a couple of times over the last couple of weeks where I came across the odd roach and man they were huge. I live overtop of a restaurant and there are a hundred more in 200m radius so it doesn't surprise me to find some. But thed ay I saw this huge black thing crawl through my kitchen screen it then flew, landing on my leg and starting crawling up which made me jump . After subduing (stunning ) the offending creature I realized it was a roach and for some reason or other decided to measure it. It was at 2 1/2 inches. Since then I have seen 2 others of around the same size. the only place I have seen roaches that size were in the Philippines and indonesia (warmer climate). I've never even seen a roach until I came to Korea and I grew up at my family's restaurant.
Anyone else having problems with the giant roaches?

No problems with roaches, because I live up in the mountains. Big problem with centipedes. All in all, I'd rather have the roaches, mostly because I got bitten by one of the centipedes last week. Not a pleasant experience. |

They are fricking huge here. I haven't actually seen bigger ones anywhere else in Asia. Haven't been to the jungles of SE Asia too much, though. |

In the Philippines they get as big as big as 5 inches. Saw a couple there that certainly came close enough to that size.
When I lived in Cheong-ju the whole apartment building was invested with roaches and silverfish. I used to kill 3 or 4 every week that came in through the cracks in the walls and ceiling. I used to put duct tapt over the cracks and even super glue to try and kep them out as well as hold up the building. |

on a similar topic are any of the bugs in Korea toxic, I'm currently battling the roaches but I have a couple of pretty huge spiders which I want rid of but am wary of disturbing them if they might fight back. There aren't any malrial mosquitos here are there??

I use a professional exterminating service called cesco. They are not cheap- but they do a DAMN good job. No problems at all after the first visit. |

Actually I like the spiders they tend to keep the other vermin populations down. But to here the sound of roaches on the wall after I turned off the lights in that place in Cheong-ju gave still gives me the willies just thinking about it. |

Everything grows bigger in africa....I grew up with "khokhos" (cockroaches) as a very frequent sight. They get pretty fat there, so it was never worth your wallpaper to swat them...
I heard somewhere that its good luck to have at least one cockroach in your house..although i don't abide by that sentiment.. |

Yes, yes the disgusting roaches. I was happily free of them in my new apartment building until those dorks who order out food and then leave leftover food in the bowls for the delivery boy to collect later start getting to work. These individuals' ignorance of the most basic hygene makes me despair. Of course the apt. s whose salaries I pay don't give a toss about environmental health problems like this. They may as well be sending the little b*stards invitations, along with the rats . |

Yeah, true true rapier. After growing up in Africa, bugs just don't scare me anymore.

Had assorted bug salad in Thailand and Giant Co ckroach on a Stick in Cambodia.
Not half bad. Crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. |

Why not invest in "bug bombs" or avail yourself of the services of an exterminator? Once you kill off the population in your apartment (if there's enough food in your neighbors' places) it might keep the inflow down to a trickle. |

i recommend COMBAT plastic disks. I had a roach problem a few months ago, really worked well.
Back home our thriving gecko population took care of just about everything (except the night adders and bush snakes. ). |
