I have heard many stories about hagwons, contracts not being honored, and many other stories from friends who taught in South Korea for two years. Are there any schools near Seoul National University that will not stiff a United States Citizen teaching English? |

Yes, almost 99% of them. |

Am I correct in finding out that 99% of all schools near Seoul National University will screw over a United States Citizen teaching English? |

I believe he is implying quite the opposite. 1% will screw you over. |

That number 99% should be 50%. There is a range of disagreements here from violence to misunderstandings. Half of all workers here are disappointed in some way to some degree. |

Exactly..
Its fairly rare to find a school that won't pay you. About 10 years ago when the ESL scene was first happening (1994-1996).. there were tons of hagwans opening up and closing a few months later.. didn't have the money or couldn't keep it going or whatever else. In those days it did happen that a teacher had that risk or possibility of that occurring. Then in 1997 with IMF that was even more prone to happen.
But now its 2005 and those hogwans that survived became very well-established with a very strong business (many even franchising themselves out and branching). They days of all no-name cowboy hogwans springing up and closing down overnight with zero accountability are over. IMF was also 8 years ago. The mass majority of schools have a reputation to fulfill, and paying their teachers is one of them to keep a good business going.
It would be extremely rare to start working somewhere around Seoul National University and not get paid.. I'd say even less than 1% chance of that happening.
If you want to cut that less than 1% down to nearly 0%.. I'd suggest inquiring from previous employees if they were paid or not. If they completed an entire contract, they were paid. |
