Holy crap we were in emart today and they had gift boxes with like 12 oranges for 40 000 and ten cans of spam for 40 000. This seems completely insane to me. why the diddly-darn-dickens would you pay a 300% markup on a shiny product just because it's in a special box?!?! (a root-tooting cardboard box with plastic wrap) I swear they had a box with maybe 20 000 worth of Ginseng on for 100 000!!!!!

They gift sets are for Lunar New Year. Expect some rice soap or a Spam set from your boss in two weeks. |

I saw a box with about 15k(in my estimation) worth of shampoo, soap, and toothpaste for 10k so maybe they're not all overpriced.
shampoo/condtioner
4 tubes toothpaste
3 bars soap
Thought about buying it just to stock up, then i decided to leave homeplus immediately before the buying fever set in. |

Most of those gift sets are overpriced for what they have in them, especially any of the meat gift sets. |

40,000 for 10 Spams is not expensive, they are around 4,000 each anyways. Fruits are the ones where they go crazy. Funniest thing I have seen were 2 pieces of cow feet (about a foot and a half long each) nicely packed in a box with red ribbons on them. Not on the box, on the feet! Ah yeah and it was 150,000.
Luckily I always get some boxes of stuff which I can pass on. |

I saw 10 small fish for 500,000 won. I've asked several people how 10 small fish could cost that much and the answers I've received are "they're rare" and "they do something to them, like dry them". |

Welcome to the world of Korean packaging. It costs money to put together a lovely package. Add in the the special occasion and you're paying top dollar. Here's an everyday example in case you missed it. You can buy a can of cold coffee with a screw on lid in a convenience store for around 1600 to 2000 Won. This container holds 275 ml. However, you can buy the same coffee with a pop up lid for roughly half that price with 200 ml. You're paying a lot for 75 ml and it's all because of the packaging. High class screw on lids cost a lot more. Any more examples? |

What's more interesting for me is that all of those gift packs include everyday ho-hum goods (spam, 2800 toothpaste, Black Tower wine, etc.) instead of something slightly more upscale (imported chocolate, real coffee, deli goods, etc.)
If my boss opts for the spam gift pack again I'll be pretty much set for the zombie apocalypse: seems like every NET to live in my current apartment ended up piling those cans up in the cupboard. |

They find the most perfect looking pears, put a sticker/ribbon on them and put them in a box.
Pears here are 3000 won each, usually. So in a gift box, 6000 each.
As long as the sheople buy them, this will continue. |

Good Lord that's expensive! Before, I didn't think Koreans could get close to the wacky Japanese prices, but that's in the same league as the $600 watermelon:

I got my Seollal gift early... 4 kilos (!) of New Zealand beef (with a certificate of origin and quality) delivered to my door
I would have taken a cheque or gift certificate in lieu of the meat. I rarely cook meat at home, I wish it were Spring already so that my friend could fire up his BBQ grill on his terrace
Time to fire up Google and search for some meat-only recipes... |

I like these boxes. They make an easy gift for the inlaws. That way I don't need any creativity or time to run and find something.
Gift boxes, the more the merrier. |
