How does one start a school newspaper? I need some new ideas for the new semester. I suggested a school newspaper to the vice-principle. She thought it was a good idea. But here's the catch. I have no friggin idea how to go about starting one. Sure, I know, get the kids to write about this, interview people around town etc. But on the technical side of things -where does one begin?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Download Adobe InDesign (or Quark if you're using a Mac). Experiment, watch online tutorials, learn!
Microsoft Publisher is also useful for simple newspaper layouts - that usually comes with Microsoft Office bundles, your computer at work might already have it. |

If you can PM your e-mail address and I can send you one of my school papers. We have been doing a school paper for about a year now.
It's going to take about 10 to 30 hours extra hours to put out one paper.
I had the kids write about a picture, spring, what they want to be when they grow up, who is there hero, there summer vacation. Some kids will write a poem, music group, science project, someone famous in Korea culture, sports stars, draw pictures, and they will make their own cartoons.
I used Microsoft Office. |

Is this for high school?
I've been running an english newspaper CA for the last three years. Advertised positions and assigned roles for each student (writer, photographer, editor, layout...)
Some high school students will know QuarkXpress, Illustrator, and the like. They are actually quite good at design and artsy photoshop stuff.
Has worked out great. Each week we have news meetings in which students share their work and pitch new stories. |

Just make sure you spell principal properly in your new newspaper. Also, make sure you know the difference between there and their.
Otherwise it will just be embarrassing. |

I was also approached about making a newspaper. This is for elementary school.
I had the idea of interviewing police, firemen, LG salespeople, etc in English. Hopefully it will fly. |

Load it up with photos. If you're school has a website check there. School art exhibitions, sports day pics. Also, publish the better answers from some of your class exercises (eg: Make a lesson on "What if...?" and include the best responses). Do a survey (eg: Favourite snack/pop star/subject) and publish the stats as a sidebar throughout the paper to fill in space. Have some of the better artists make comics, or make some yourself online. Riddles, movie/book/concert/video game reviews, etc. |

Here's one I made a few years ago.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q8VSQ0L6
The pages are in JPEG format.
There are one or two problems with the font cos this computer didn't have certain fonts at the time of uploading but whatever.
I won some award at the POE for this or one of the other ones I made (despite the department head insisting that "It's not THAT important").
Lucky I had some smart students. |

Are you in the US, Canada, England, or Australia? I sure hope they speak English or else it will be a short experiment. |

Like a legit newspaper? Gather writers and start writing. Then publish online because hardly anyone read directly on newspaper.
