I recently posted about my school's request/demand that I submit to swine flu vaccination since I will be leaving Korea for Chinese New Year.

I am opposed to unnecessary vaccinations but my 'choices' were either to get the shot, or be denied teaching hours for a week after I return.

The xenophobia and absurdity of this demand is quite clear to me but that's not the point of this post. Rather than continually argue with them and end up going to the labour board, I just went ahead and got the shot.

When I returned from the hospital, I submitted the receipt to my school for repayment. I distinctly remember my head instructor saying that 'the school will pay for the needle'. She wasn't there at the time so I gave the receipt to my director who said that the school would not pay for it. We called the head instructor and she denied ever saying that the school would pay.

At this point I am fuming mad. My HI is well aware of my objection to needless vaccination and now she is denying ever telling me that they would pay. As I see it they should pay for it (whether she said it or not) because they asked me to get it.

That evening my HI calls me and accuses me of lying. She said that if I was wrong and didn't give her a written apology then I would be fired. I told her that she didn't have the authority (which is true) and that I would report them to the labour board if they did indeed fire me. The next day I sat down and calmly discussed my concerns with her and then brought in a teacher who also heard her tell me that. They eventually coughed up the cash but not before my HI tells me that 'Ive just sold my conscience for 30,000 won'. She's basically accusing me of being a thief even though I have a witness to back me up. I'm so mad I just want to screw the school any way that I can. If I didn't have a girlfriend here I would pull a runner.

That's my story! So, what would you do?!

This has the making of a classic. I'd start getting my documents in order and start searching for a new job.

Call in sick tomorrow and say it was 'side effects of the shot'.

If the situation escalates, give up your notice or do a runner.

You won. Do nothing. Walk in everyday and just smile at her. They won't fire you. It's just a bluff and you called it. Get a mug made that says "In your face".
Think about it. If they're so damn cheap that they'll fight you tooth and nail over 30,000 won, you really think they'll lose out on potentially thousands of dollars by flying someone new over from the states, just because you ticked them off? Hell no. She'll get plastered this weekend and forget all about it by Monday.

I would've thrown down the 30 in front of everyone and said "Ok, I'll pay it. Just to show that you are evil and I am good. You lied and I didn't. So I will pay because you are a liar. Liar. Some nice working with a liar like you. Why do you have to lie? Terrible thing, that is. Can't stand liars. How do you sleep at night?" And walk away.

Worth the 30,000.

She was saving face in front of the director. Screw the foreigner. Foreigners don't need face, or so the thinking goes. She sacrificed your reputation (I doubt that you really care) for her own.

THIS. Definitely this.

I kept a running tally with my last crapwon boss and made sure when I was doing my runner I left them an equivalent amount of embarrassment and upset for the evil they'd perpetrated over the course of my contract.

Very Happy Very Happy
