|
|
I just had the internet set up at my apartment. I asked for high speed, the technician put a line in and set it up.
The first thing I did was a few speed tests and the speed was only 2.0Mbps down and 0.3Mbps up. That doesn't seem like high speed to me. Should I give them a call or will it possibly improve? It was installed about 30 minutes ago. I tried restarting my modem and my computer to no effect. |

How much are you paying? It might not be the highest speed available from that company. Qook, for example, has varying bandwidth speeds depending on how much you want to pay.
They may have just assumed you wanted the absolute cheapest connection. |

They said it was "high speed" and I asked for the highest speed but as far as I know they're only going to charge me 20,000W per month. It's cable, not DSL. |

I did some searching around. I'm with a company called C&M and I live in Haebangchon.
There are other posts on this company and apparently it's crap. Seriously, 2.0 mb download speeds and 0.3 mb upload speeds... in KOREA?! It's like dial up. I can't even watch Youtube videos. I can't game. I can't really do much of anything except browse.

mine is 20.0 up and 20.0 down
I am on wireless though. never plug my notebook into the connection directly.. it's probably way faster that way. |

For future reference, C&M and other cable TV/internet packages should be avoided, unless you're in an area not served by KT etc.
I was with Kangnam Kable Kompany/C&M in 2008 and they were horrible. |

I just took it because my land lord has some deal worked out with them and it was installed a few hours after I moved in. I was hoping it would just be decent internet. I didn't expect it to parallel dial-up.
If I call KT will they inform C&M or will I have to call C&M myself? Not used to this. Never had problems with internet here in the past.
Well, at least I can browse the web. I just can't download/watch video/play games/use torrents etc... My fastest download speed was 50kb/sec and that was using a download accelerator that was downloading from a Korean server.
Another thing that's funny: if I play games, I ping 350m/s to servers that are in Seoul, FFS. |

I was signed up for C&M when I first got here. It was completely horrible. Incredibly slow, horrendously unstable. I used to have connection problems with my ISP back in the US but it was nothing compared to this. I switched to KT and it's like night and day. So much faster, and no stability problems. Basically cable in Korea is extremely bad because of the population density and nature of cable connections, and C&M just adds to this by being an exceptionally shitty service. You need a good DSL service. |

I'm with Gangnam cable and while I don't get the advertised speeds my bit torrent will often hit over 1mb/second on the dl and about 300K/second uploading... more than good enough for me.
Despite the super fast connection I still often find myself waiting for youtube videos to buffer. For some reason youtube and Korea don't play nicely. |

don't discount the notion that you might have some crap running on your computer.
A good portion of the malware out there doesn't destroy your data or wreck your hard drive but tries to steer you to other sites, sometimes by force. If you've recently run a check using super-anti-malware or some similar tool then, yes, your internet is crap. You should, as a general rule, clean your system once a month or so |

I was in the same situation. I had C & M for a year and while it was awesome for TV(i mean...8k won for like 50 channels? Can't beat that in America), the internet speeds were horrible. I was finally able to get KT's internet(while keeping C&M for the TV service) and it is night and day. Seriously...if you can, make the switch asap. I'm sure SK's internet service would be much better compared to C&M's internet as well but I don't have any experience with SK's internet. |

I pay $20,000 as well for cable and internet. My speeds max at 1.4 Mbps. That translates to 11.2 mpbs. Fast enough for me. |

I had to move to a new apartment recently, and thus give up my super fast KT connection at my old place. The new place doesn't have an individual router; it just has a hole in the wall where you plug in a network cable. I guess the whole building shares one connection. It is really slow! I can't play any games online because I lag too much. Videos take too long to download. I only get about 200-300 kb a sec download at most.
I suppose that this internet is just free and included with the rent. I'm going to talk to my boss tomorrow and see what the options are. Maybe it would be worth springing for the individual network connection from KT. |

Couldn't agree more. Always choose a dedicated connection and avoid cable modems unless you have too.

Cable (ie DOCSIS) has inherently higher latency than straight metro ethernet (KT etc). This comes about through the need for the cable modem to request time slots where it can transmit upstream, which produces higher pings. |
