if this hard drive :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5659779&Sku=TSD-1000EARS

will fit in this computer:

http://www.meetgadget.com/gadget/14528/Dell+Inspiron+530s/specs

?

Is there a code or something to look for re: compatibility? My hard drive has died and I don't want to buy a whole new system.

The secret code is SATA (Serial ATA) and as far as I can see it should work fine.

Quick answer is YES.
A SATA drive will fit into and be compatible with that computer.

Storage memory
* Interface: SATA

Replacing the current hard drive will be fine. You may have a problem if you want to add another hard drive, since that case looks rather small.

Thanks for the replies.

When I put the new hard drive in is the process of putting Windows on the same as when I reinstalled Windows? I insert the Windows re-instillation DVD and follow the prompts? Or do I have to buy a new OS?

..

The current hard drive failed on me a few weeks ago. It would not boot up. It made a clicking sound. I had not backed up my data. I read that putting the drive in the freezer for a day may give me enough life to start it up long enough to pull off my data. It worked. I got about 5 hours of life out of it. The frozen hard drive trick worked for me. FYI.
